This is our favorite temple in Arashiyama and possibly Kyoto. It is scenic, tranquil, and not overrun with tourists. We walked to this temple after seeing the touristy Bamboo Grove. We enjoyed seeing the bamboo growing in this temple much more. Different sets of stairways...More

We came to Jojakkoji after visiting the bamboo forest and Tenryu-ji and was so relieved that there were no big crowds when we were there. Note that we went there during Spring in the afternoon. I realise that the crowds can be quite formidable during...More

Visited a number of temples in this area of Kyoto, this oft-overlooked temple was one of the better ones and well worth a visit, particularly during autumn foliage season.

The architecture here isn't as impressive as other temples, but the huge quantity of maple trees, winding trails, and great views make this a lovely spot especially during the fall. The walk to get here from the Arishiyama station is very pretty as well.

The best place for maple leaves watching. It's quiet, peaceful and when you walk to the top you can actually overlook the whole Kyoto city. Entrance fee is ¥400 per person. Totally worthy.

Another beautiful place in Arashiyama, the 400-800 year-old temple is a large garden with a collection of graves (ancestor places), smaller temples and a pagoda. It used to be a hermitage from the 18th to the 20th century. The highlight is the meticulously cared-for garden...More

We arrived here with umbrellas, just after the rain ended. This place was so green and lush, and lucky for us, mostly empty and serene. There is moss. The view from the top was such a fantastic surprise. Pathway stones can be slippery when wet,...More

Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best
eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved
Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji
Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea
houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the
riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature
lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The
area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and
