This is a review of the market held on the 15th day of each month at the Chionji Temple, not a review of the temple. This fabulous market has hundreds of stalls selling mostly modern Japanese handicrafts, many with a traditional element (such as brooches,...More

Found this temple by mistake when I was looking for Chion-IN. They are both Jodo sect Buddhist temples. Chionji is more properly known as Hyakumanben Chionji which refers to the million times a 14th century priest chanted the Nenbutsu to halt a deadly epidemic. The...More

Located near Kyoto University, this is a place where you can visit and relax. It’s quiet and not many people around. Free. And there are some Sakura trees inside. Good place to relax if you don’t want to fight the crowd.

Nope! On a rainy day the monthly handicrafts market held on the temple grounds on the 15 day will be cancelled. Nope! It is conducted. On a rainy day the crowds will be smaller. Nope! Everyone in Kyoto is there along with visiting family and...More

We've visited about a dozen temples in Kyoto and this was my absolute favorite. While their main building is being reconstructed, you can still see monks on the grounds praying. There were few tourists and we were able to go inside (no shoes of course)...More

Visit this temple at night. It is truly magical! The path is illuminated and the temple itself has a golden glow. If you walk from this temple towards Yasaka shrine, you will find little statues along the way. You can touch little Budhas for good...More

As mentioned by Holly J, the handicraft market is on the 15th of every month. The temple grounds are filled with vendors selling traditional & contemporary crafts such as pottery, wood crafts, clothing made from kimono fabric, children's clothing, jewelry, leather goods, pastry, beads, components...More

If you find yourself in Kyoto on the 15th of the month, you must make your way to the Tezukuri 'Handmade' Flea Market at Chionji. My family was overwhelmed by the size and variety of goods on sale. Every inch of the large temple grounds...More

Lucky enough to be at this Temple during the Lantern Festival in March 2013. They had a spectacular light show projected onto the temple. Was absolutely mesmerising. The show was free, but there is a temple entrance fee.

City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its
blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered
shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street
bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to
peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home
goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center
is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and
clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of
