I visited here recently and enjoyed it a lot. If you don't like trained dolphins and seals maybe don't go but there are many other great things to see. Highlights were the penguins, the jelly fish and the saltwater display. Some displays were a little small for the fish and I would hope they will correct this with time. Everything... More

You can spend half day or 2-3hours with your family there. There are 9 zones, you can see dolphin, seals, African penguins, giant salamander, etc. Most of the visitors are locals and it closes to Umekoji park. Kids may enjoy touring around. :) Remarks. You can store your belongings in the locker.

It was good design inside and outside. I really don't need dolphin show for me. It was just okay. Other things are everything good!

We came here at the end of a long hot day which was a relief ad it is dark and cool inside. Being from Perth, it is different to aquaroum and zoo at home. The animals are in small spaces which is a bit sad. They have a wide array of animals and sea life and although we missed shows... More

I only really came in because it was raining and I wanted to get under cover but I thought ok, I'll give it a go. The big salamanders were in tanks that were so small that they could barely lay straight. Some of the other fish seemed happy enough. There were a few lizards in absurdly tiny tanks. There was... The aquarium was small but you can still enjoy the marine and the environment inside. I especially like the show and it was wonderful. It's a good place for family travel and there was a big park nearby.

The animals, especially the dolphins, live under terrible conditions and are forced to perform several times a day. The sea turtles live in a small fenced area where children are allowed to come and play with them. They show no respect for the animals at all.

Our last day in Japan was spent under an absolute all day downpour. And it was fantastic. We walked from our accommodation near kyoto station to the Kyoto Aquarium and spent a few hours and thoroughly enjoyed.

The design of Kyoto aquarium, in general, is pretty amazing. There was a very wide range of marine species that gave us a clear idea of how big the sea really is. Some species that is exclusive to Japan's ocean territory was also clearly explained in the description board. I particularly loved the dolphin show (don't forget to check for... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
