The 3 hour tour started with a short intro to kyoto, after which we embarked on a walk which brought us to a few different spots to meet the locals and sample what Kyoto is known for. If you are after a full historical walking tour, this tour does not offer that. We got to sample food, sake, calligraphy writing,... More

Samaria Joe's tour was wonderful! It is a pleasant 5 hour walk learning about customs and and enjoying samplings of traditional items. He is pleasant and knows a lot about everything. Extremely enjoyable and would very highly recommend this tour. However, this is not a tour to take if you just want to hit all the big tourist sites. It's... More

We had a wonderful time with Samurai Joe!We were so lucky to even have him to ourselves (my husband and I and 3 children, youngest is 4 years old) on Sunday morning. My children found him nice and witty. We are still in awe with his samurai sword skill! It made us gasp:) I was impressed to learn that at... More

We have been out on with Samurai Jo today in Kyoto and had a great time! If all you want to do in Kyoto is look at shrines and temples then don't come on this tour. If you want to meet a nimble, inspiring and fun 88 year old Samurai, see a Samurai show, meet 95 year old locals and... More

Samurai Joe's tour is not to be missed while in Kyoto and while he still can walk for 5 hours. For his age he's very spry and speaks English so well that he can make jokes. He took us (my husband, son and myself and another family with their son) to speciality shops we would never have discovered on our... More

Our tour with Samurai Joe was one of our best days touring in Japan. We walked for 6 hours and my kids (5,7) were entertained and happy through the tour. He was engaging and endearing and showed us parts of Kyoto that we wouldn't have seen or known about. The kids loved his Samurai show and my son enjoyed being... More

We joined this tour expecting it to be fairly informative and entertaining, and it did not disappoint! Samurai Joe was both very knowledgeable with his wealth of experience in the area and entertaining with his funny jokes and his very impressive sword work. And at 88 years old he's an inspiration to be still doing a job which he loves!... More

Samurai Joe is indeed a treasure! Due to time constraints we did not have lunch incorporated into our semi-private tour (on a weekday), but despite this, our family of 6 and another group that were with us (judging by the laughs we had) had really enjoyed the tour. We were lucky that the weather was nice and sunny too. The... More

We joined a group of about 20 others to listen and follow Samurai Joe around Kyoto for five wonderful hours. Joe who is 87 brings to these tours a sense of the city and its history without being too heavy on facts and figures. There is a sense fun and light heartedness which made the time pass quickly. While we... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
