Perched high above Higashiyama, Kiyomizu temple is a spectacular sight any time of the year. Try the strong man challenge at the entrance and then admire the view.

We visited on an extremely cold day in late December. Even without the foliage, this is a beautiful place. The architecture of the buildings and location on the side of the hill make for a wealth of photographic opportunities. Truly beautiful!

Would recommend checking this out as a must-see area along with Gion. You could possibly even hit up Fushimi Inari shrine and come here afterwards. There is a lot of up hill walking so beware if you've already been walking a lot. The view is gorgeous and the temples around this area are also beautiful. The best part were the... More

This temple is absolutely stunning. One of the main buildings has 1300 wooden column holding the structure up, and there is not a single nail in those columns and beams.....and it was reconstructed only 350 years ago :). If you are in the area this is a must visit.

This was the 2nd time that we had visited this temple and we enjoyed the sights as much the 2nd time around as the first. But this time the crowds were even bigger as it was a Sunday and late in the afternoon. Amazing to see such a huge structure built without nails - fantastic. Well worth a visit.

Kiyomizudera is a special place in the most magical of Japanese cities, Kyoto. The impressive timber structure, the soaring pagoda, the icy mountain water that refreshes the body and the spirit are only a few of its charms. You will see people from all over the world enjoying this temple. We were treated to something special this time...SNOW. Magical.
