I did it again: went to a museum in Japan on a Sunday. Not only a Sunday, but a rainy Sunday. My reasons for choosing this museum on this day, even in retrospect, were sound, but the results catastrophic. If I wrote the number of...More

This is a HUGE place, with 3 floors: 1 each for Fine Arts, Handicrafts, and Archaeology. The 1897 building is used only for Special Exhibits; there's a 2014 building for everything else. In spite of the tremendous variety of exhibits the Museum boasts, it's not...More

The photographs displayed as of 7/23/17 is of the old building - the museum has moved into a new structure ADJACENT to the original building which is indeed closed for renovation. it is open with the new exhibits accessible to English speaking. For me, museums...More

This museum has a rather nice collection, but compared with the Tokyo National Museum this place does not allow us to take any photos for all the exhibits. So stingy! Recently, even National Gallery in London and National Museum in Taipei now allow us to...More

We were turned away today today, May 16, 2017. Told the museum is being extensively renovated and will be closed for a long time.. There's only a side exhibition going on of Kano art, whatever that is. We crossed the street and went to the...More

Housed in a modern International style satellite building to the original museum is a special temporary exhibit of works by the master Kaiho Yusho from 1573-1615. There are scroll paintings, letters and large-scale screens which were originally designed for Buddhist monasteries and an imperial villa....More

The special exhibition on the artwork of Kaiho Yusho was beautiful. However we expected the museum to have more than the one exhibition, and we went through in less than an hour. Given the entry fee we expected a little more to look at and...More

Tickets for this museum are currently half price because of the extensive restoration the museum is undergoing; this means that a substantial amount of the museum is closed for viewing. Because of this I found the amount of artefacts on view to be quite few,...More

The museum building itself is a treasure and the works it contains represent pre modern Japanese and Asian sculpture, paintings calligraphy, pottery, lacquerware and more. A visit to KNM pairs well with a visit to the nearby must-see Sanjiusan-gendo Temple.

I was frankly disappointed in two respects: First there were far too many displays of Chinese artifacts and art. This is Japan, right? And it is supposed to be a National Museum, right? So what's with the Chinese stuff? Second, there just wasn't that much...More
