Potoncho is s definite must-see when visiting Kyoto, especially at night. Plenty of restaurants and bars, featuring mostly Japanese restaurants and cafe, but you'll find the odd restaurant/bar serving foreign or yoshoku fare as well. The canals are charming in their own right, especially over...More

We had a good walk around here, so many shops and restaurants to check out. It was a hive of activity and had a great atmosphere, definitely worth coming to.

We visited this area three times going at night for dinner overlooking the river and for drinks. We thought it had a lot of characters and we enjoyed just checking out all the different restaurants and bars.

Plenty to see and lots of good places to eat. Close to the river where there is the opportunity to relax and loads of interesting bridges and buildings. A real bonus is the opportunity to spot a passing geisha, which we were lucky enough to...More

The Pontocho is a well-known street for high-priced tea houses where geisha and maiko are often invited to perform dances and songs for well-off businessmen. The street itself is beautifully lit with lanterns during the evening, and there are many good Japanese restaurants.

Having found Gion quiet & disappointing we were really pleased to find that Pontocho is much more atmospheric. We particularly liked walking along the little canal with its many footbridges, it reminded us of Amsterdam. Plenty of bars & restaurants with a relaxed vibrant feel....More

Old street well preserved. Not very long. It is nice to visit at night. One can walk down along a small canal in one direction, which runs parallel to the street, then go back n the other direction through poncho.

Good atmosphere, many restaurants to choose from, bit touristy but locals also go there. Nice to see at night with all the lights on.

Beautiful street with lots of places to eat or grab a drink. The narrow alleys that are lit by the red Japanese lanterns just lead to the scenic beauty of this unique and interesting street.

The street is narrow with restaurants at both sides, between Gion and Nashiki market. One facing the river. Quiet variety of foods. Go there at night for good river view.

Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's
most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow
street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's
busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls,
Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life,
making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to
come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and
bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly
