You can only get to the island through a tour company - we used Gunkanjima Concierge. As many others have noted, they were very friendly. You get to see a bunch of other stuff on the way out & back in - including the shipyards,...More

You have to book in advance. There are many companies offering this tour so read up before you decide on which. On the day of tour, no landing was allowed due to the typhoon. So they took us around the island to take some photos....More

Due to the strong typhoon a couple of months ago, no landing is allowed. I paid about 3500 yen (4000 yen originally, but they returned the 500 yen because we could not land). The tour was like less than 3 hours, and about 5 times...More

Bought a tour trip with Seaman Tours for 3,300yen. Originally on the website it said we'd be able to go onto the island, but apparently that hasn't been the case since September or so, as a typhoon knocked out the landing port/ramp so noone can...More

Went with Gunkajima Concierge tours. Easy to get to, Tram and 800 m walk from Nagasaki station Nice boat lots of paperwork before boarding. Curiously and almost discriminatory the English audio tour only operates on the rear open deck with uncomfortable plastic sweaty seats. Whilst...More

There are some really great photos of the ruins of Gunkanjima online, so I was quite looking forward to seeing them for myself. The tour operators even make you wear covered shoes, so I was under the impression that you could walk around between the...More

We got the boat from the main port through a company called Gunkanjima Concierge. The trip was enriching to understand their past as a coal mining city. They also have a musuem which explained more in-depth. One should go to their museum to understand before...More

We got the boat from the main port through a company called Gunkanjima Concierge. I would use them again, as the boat was spacious and the staff were attentive. The audio tour was not very useful but a really good english brochure was provided with...More

Don’t waste your time and money (trip is quite expensive about $50 per person). It is even more true for those who don’t speak Japanese (the audio guide in English is not working properly). At the end when you arrive on the island, you can’t...More

The whole trip takes about 2hrs 30mins, and you will get about 60mins on the island. So it will be 40-45mins each way, depending on weather conditions.
