About
Located in the heart of downtown Kuala Lumpur, REXKL is a community & cultural hub that occupies the historical site of one of the first theatres in the country before being founded in 1947. After the first fire in 1972, Rex Cinema was rebuilt as a state-of-the-art single-screen theatre with over a thousand seating capacity. In its heyday, the Shaw Brothers, and later on by Golden Screen Cinemas operated the theatre before another fire in 2002 that ended its glory days as a cinema. 17 years later, a group of creative entrepreneurs led by Shin Tseng and Shin Chang decided to re-activate this 60,000 sq. ft. building as part of the mission to rejuvenate the forgotten part of KL by injecting new businesses, cultural agenda, and creative programs into this otherwise dilapidated hidden gem.

Beautiful place, very industrial with exposed truss, unfinished concrete wall and floor. All these combined to give a very matching setting for the retail and commercial activities found here - cafe, food court, exhibition space (currently on fashion) and a design bookshop. The play of materials is awesome, wood against concrete, concrete against glass. We enjoyed everything here.

This review will cover the REXKL I joined on May 6, 2023 and May 13, 2023:

1.) REXKL itself (5/5)
2.) Haze | Activist art exhibition (3.5/5)
3.) BookXcees on the third floor (5/5)
4.) Ticklish Ribs & 'Wiches, at the food and beverage outlets at the ground floor (3/5)

1.) REXKL (5/5), The history of this remarkable Petaling Street building is steeped in resilience.

Despite facing two fires, one in the 1970s and another in 2007 when it served as a backpackers' hotel, Rex has undergone a transformation and emerged as a beacon of hope.

Since taking on the name REXKL in 2019, it has become a dynamic community center that fosters the arts and celebrates the rich heritage of Kuala Lumpur, offering a fusion of culinary modernity and authentic Malaysian flavours.

2.) REXKL, HAZE | Activist Art Exhibition (3.5/5)

It is a collaborative exhibition organized by Studio Birthplace, Splash & Burn, and Greenpeace, highlighting the issue of Haze pollution in Malaysia.

The exhibition turned out to be a resounding success. On the first day, it became evident to me how crucial effective communication is and how Greenpeace made the right decision in reaching out to an artist. In summary, the seminar on May 6 included too many technical terms and abbreviations from the eco-ist side. I will leave it at that.

Another notable aspect is the improvement seen in the "Haze-Zilla" model from the opening day, which can be observed by comparing the model in the attached picture. While the impact of the artwork was positive, it has the potential to be further enhanced if the model incorporates the sticky notes written by each attendee during the exhibition, instead of creating a new one.

Next, let's discuss the composition of the artwork, which can also be improved. While it is understandable that the exhibition's concept revolves around "Haze," and I agree with the use of smoke machines, there are other variations of machines that could have been utilized as well. The reason being that by using fog liquid, the fog tends to obstruct the artwork and engulf the entire area.
This approach is more suitable for larger spaces or environments with more light or laser reflections, like concerts. For this exhibition, where people need to closely examine the art, bulletin boards, books, and projection art styles (to further emphasise, the same as the on-going Van Gogh Alive art exhibition), etc., it would have been more suitable for visibility to use a dry ice smoke machine, ensuring that the smoke only covers the floor.

Lastly, let's address the party on May 13. While it is understandable that e-cigarettes technically generate vapor and that the link between e-cigarettes and the haze problem is still being researched by scientists worldwide, it is contradictory to allow smoking inside the "haze" exhibition.

Nevertheless, it effectively showcases the origin of the haze problem, humans, and it was during that moment that I discovered the true beauty of this exhibition.

3.) BookXcess REXKL (5/5), is truly a masterpiece in itself, captivating visitors with its magnificent layout and astonishing lighting layer.

As I stepped into the bookstore, I was immediately submerged by the composition of art that surrounded me, enhancing the overall experience of book browsing.

Although my visit didn't result in finding the specific books I was looking for, namely "The Picture of Dorian Gray," "Brotherhood of the Snake," and "Cosmos," I understand that these titles are considered rare. Despite this, the owner tried assisting me in my search. This was truly commendable.

4.) Ticklish Ribs & 'Wiches (3/5), the Sloppy Fries sides I indulged in were absolutely delightful. Regrettably, the Lazy Bones sandwich, or to be more precise, the signature BBQ ribs, were far too salty. As for the Laughing Limes, it was decent, true, but resembling an ordinary lime at best.

Very positively surprised by book selection. Right up my alley. However, all (?) seemed to be in English and I couldn't find any books focused on local topics. I suppose it has a "hipster vibe", but I am almost a half century too old to care. Not well air conditioned.

Everything about this place was amazing! I ate at Kuno, and Ryan the cook made the most amazing taco (Mexican food with Malaysian influence) and was so lovely! My friend ate at ticklish and literally licked the wings clean.
We spent 40 mins in the book store upstairs walking around - never been in one quite like it.
10/10 would recommend! Come 4pm and after though as a lot of the food stalls don’t open until then!

Visited on March 25th 2023, had a day in KL
And while walking around China town in the evening, I came across this place
I had a few beers at the Rex bar , which is a small bar in the complex, and serves a nice collection of craft beers at a reasonable price
The members of staff were very polite , and gave me some good recommendations
Also in the complex ( bottom floor )
There is a good number of outlets to get a variety of different foods
If you are in KL , near China town then I would recommend this place

An interesting rough environment houses many eateries and one of the new Bookexcess shops, which I came looking for. They sell publishers left over prints in English starting from 18 rm. The building is not an old warehouse as I thought, but a former cinema. The atmosphere fits well to the new coming of Chinatown with interesting small restaurants in the old shophouses. Maybe the area can even shake off the bad karma of the faked goods market.

What a hidden gem! I saw this place from Instagram and decided to pay a visit there.
You can also buy books (all the books are in English) there. There is also a small eatery downstairs.

Came here to visit the famed BookXcess and it was so worth it. A must-do while in KL if you are a book-lover.

There are food options at the first 2 floors though it's more of a hipster area so expect higher prices for the food here.

Location: At the periphery of Chinatown area. It's right opposite KFC.

Previously an old iconic cinema. Now has been transformed to a marketplace with F&B Kiosks, retail shops, book store, nursery and antique display corner. Every corner is an instragrammable place. You may rent a space on their 1st floor for events.
