About
For anyone who wants to understand the many facets that make up Malaysia today, start with a stroll through Kuala Lumpur's oldest neighborhood. As you discover the heritage sites of KL, a tin mining settlement that has grown into a thriving metropolis, you'll also hear stories of what brought Chinese and Indian immigrants, the trades they practiced and their traditions and beliefs, many of which endure today. Sample a variety of authentic foods and see where different communities worship. Eat with locals, experience the places they live and pray and fall in love with a city and a people!

This review is about 3 years late. If you're ever in Kuala Lumpur, I highly recommend scheduling a tour with Be Tourist. Our tour guide Sean was great! He kept the group engaged and showed us the city and secret gems hidden within the city.

The tour was a few hours and included the first Buddhist temple, alley way restaurants and the famous Klang river at the foot of the Masjid Jamek, one of Malaysia’s oldest mosques.

We would be lost in KL if it weren't for Be Tourist. Thank you for introducing us to a beautiful city rich in pride and heritage.

A walk tour for me is always a great start to learn more about a city I know nothing about. Just by concidence, I learned about the free HERITAGE TOUR and participated in the walk today. Leng (the tour guide) was very knowledgable, I enjoyed the tour a lot. The tour takes you around the old part of Kuala Lumpur, you learn a lot about the history of the city, I was very happy that I learned about the tour. The tour is free but obviously, I made a donation, a great introduction to Kuala Lumpur!

We started this walk by accident. After spending some time shopping in Central Market I came across this map outside the information desk.It outlined 3 different heritage walks in different parts of KL.The map is titled "Kuala Lumpur,Walks and Tours Map.The 3 are Chinatown,Merdeka Square and Lake Gardens. The supplied map is amazingly comprehensive and also outlines historical information and pictures of most of the sites. My family undertook the Chinatown heritage walk which took about 4 hours and covered so much history relating to the past culture of KL.I would seriously recommend this walk if you want to experience the real KL.

This is the fourth time posting my brutally honest review, been removed for presumably minor content infractions.

Signed up for this because of the reviews, but had a healthy dose of skepticism as the number of "Excellent" reviews are off the charts. My suspicions were only aroused when: the Manager waffled on about how the tour guide had risen above adversity to find his life's calling, the tour company "required" an excessive amount of info including passport information because of some ambiguous govt regulations (wasnt required with other tour companies in KL), and they insisted on taking a group photo before leaving the tour office. Needless to say, my "dodgy radar warning" was screaming that something was amiss but I continued with high expectations.

We spent the first 2.5 hours walking within 500 metres of the place we started, spending far too much time in an unattractive dilapidated Chinese temple, followed by eating fruit at an ordinary fruit stand in a major tourist zone. The Chinese temple was apparently the oldest in KL, but it was dirty, uninspiring and didn't seem welcoming.

I live in, and travel extensively in Asia, so I am an eager omnivore happy with whatever is put in front of me. Having said that, I do not think it is necessary to expose myself to unhygienic, and unsanitary conditions to experience local cuisine. The "fried noodle" shop in a decaying, rank alley with chipped mugs and dirty tables was nothing more than regular noodles fried in a wok with some chopped vegetables and "secret sauce" served by a cook incessantly spinning his Wok on the burner, presumably for effect. Just as we were finishing our bowl of fried noodle slop and getting ready to go, the guide plopped himself down with his own heaping mound of steaming noodles and began to tuck in as we waited for him to finish!

Unfortunately, most (all?) of the information provided on KL is nothing more than what can be read online. What I, and others are looking for is real local insight from a local. To their credit, all the people at Be Tourist seemed exceedingly nice, but based on my individual experience, and reading the negative reviews where locals are not allowed to participate, it is obvious to me that this is an elaborate tourist cash-grab leveraging social media. I can do a walking tour in many cities in Asia for free, and the food we ate was worth less than $5, so charging $50 you can understand how expectations are not met. Finally, the insistence on taking a picture at the beginning of the tour was understood later when I received an email that they had uploaded said picture of me without permission to their FB page, and if I could provide any "positive comments" on the tour they would also upload to FB. The responses to the same negative comments on TA promising improvement while seemingly having changed nothing, only further validate my assessment that this company lacks sincerity in how they provide value to eagerly gullible tourists.

While this tour is a poor representation of KL street food, KL has an excellent array of street cuisine regardless of ethnicity. I highly recommend taking your $50 and walking over to Jalan Alor with a multitude of street vendors and restaurants, all truly good to excellent. I would also note that all of them made an effort to be clean and hygienic but still best to get a pot of hot tea to pour over your dishes and utensils.

This morning I called to book a place for my son's Japanese friend who is visiting him. Since it is his first time visiting Kuala Lumpur, my son being his host would like to accompany him in case of language problems. The travel agency did not allow my son to accompany his Japanese friend even though i was happy to pay for 2 tickets. The travel agent says it is the company's POLICY.... I am wondering why??? Is it because they are showing something that they know is not local or which a local know is false or misleading. We do not aim to create trouble but was very happy to know that there is a local Malaysian heritage walk which we can take foreign visitors to. But it was certainly a shock to hear this guy insisting that the walk is for foreigners ONLY and no locals not allowed.... So they are catering to foreigners who do not have Malaysian friends who may be able to inform them otherwise. What is there to hide?? I wonder......

Dear Valued Guest : Looking at your title of the review is you need clarification . Allow me to clarify. Your son and yourself is Malaysian and a host to this Japanese friend . I am sure you have read through the tourist profile in website also we have spell out clearly that Tourist with limited experience of MALAYSIA is suitable for this activity . As a Malaysian when young we are reading History of Malaysia . As a local you should take the initiative to understand the basic history . Since you choose to be host you should show have basic knowledge . You can do it perfect . What is our objectives here is not to encourage the tourist today just depend internet and guide book information. Should experience with the local . So not every tourist lucky like your son's friend have a local to host . 2ndly you mentioned you worried language problem , then this a wrong tour for you . Because being a language interpreter is not easy . I do not think your son can immediately interpreted. that will reduce the enjoyment of your Japanese friend too if his understanding of English level is limited. 3rdly you mentioned the contents is showing some false or misleading . That is the reason that's why we do not allow local . I hope you should do your homework before you accuse us . This walk we conduct free from 2010 Oct till 31st December 2012. 2500 feedback s collected , Without any sponsorship . All by own support . We welcome everybody include local till 1st July 2011. Reasons: We realized many tourist walk and experience by themselves therefor is not beneficial to the locals . they visit the big attractions to big restaurants or fast food . what about the local stalls and local religion temples also shown no interest by the local people . So we want to encourage local to plant the sense of pride and respect our cultural . But Voluntary system is not working . As local many come with agenda want the information and start do chargeable tour by their own . Some local use this as their platform to promote of their own products. Some complaint why you show ally bring them to place are not safe . The Management team decided in order to promote a good products we need to differentiate the segment market . Local and foreigner experiences also demand and expectations will be difference . Be tourist team always like to stress the point the responsibilities and the professionalism . The enjoyment of everyone is important we cannot be perfect but we must know our own ability and strength that what we can do the best . I was told you did mentioned CHINA TOWN is not safe i want the bodyguards to follow my son and friend. Of cause we will reject you . That shows to other tourist Malaysia is a unsafe country even local do not trust their own country . The journey from day 1 we choose and we know our missions to achieve . From websites and TV interview also Radio Interview , even press paper we mentioned clearly . Nothings to hide . We have pride and stand our rights to protect the products . Founder of this walk she always wish more youngsters to participate especially Malaysian but do it the right way and the right time . For Malaysian approach is different as i mentioned early your background is different form the foreigners therefor is have to be request and tailor make tour. Lastly , In future Malaysian you wish to joint our activity please send us a special request . We will design a Malaysian approach or private tour . because your taste and flavor definitely different from the foreigner . I hope by now i make you know us better and understand the quality of each products is not easy to sustain and always a reason . that's the hard work we gain from day 1 till now. Thanks for reading and appreciated your understanding.

To be clear, the Malaysia Heritage Walk is offered by a company called Be Tourist Information & Service Centre. They offer a free Heritage Walk, as well as a number of other paid tours. I took the Eat, Love & Pray tour for RM130 per person and it was by far the best guided tour I have ever taken. It was listed as a 4-hour tour, but our guide hosted us for over 5 hours so she could incorporate our areas of interest and answer all of our questions. During the tour we stopped for three meals, had a number of snacks and drinks along the way, visited a couple of important religious places and learned about the history and culture of the city. All of the food and drinks purchased were included in the price. I consider this tour a MUST for anyone visiting KL. I know they don't have a complete website yet, but don't be put off by this. I emailed them to reserve my spot and received a response confirming my reservation in less than a day. You can also call or just drop in for more info.

We went on this tour in April 2014, we went on the morning session as when it rains in KL, it happens in the afternoon. and when it rains- it rains! Sean was our tour guide and he went out of his way to ensure that everyone in our tour enjoyed themselves. We had a great group of people in our tour, all up there was 7 people which I feel is a great number as we all got to know each other.

There is plenty of yummy food on tour with generous servings! The food places visited are clearly not ones tourists go to- not because they are bad places but because tourists don't know about these places and some tourists are cautious about eating at market style places. We tried everything and figured for a tour to be the #1 thing to do in KL then everything they give us will be safe. I loved seeing the Chinese Temple, Hindu Temple and the outskirts of the Mosque. Places I probably would never have gone to but so glad that I did. We even saw a ceremony in the Hindu Temple and got a blessing there- such a unique experience.

The walking is very minimal, I found we spent more time standing and listening to Sean then walking- which is good if you are worried the tour may be too much walking for you. I recommend doing this tour as one of the first things you do in KL on your first day. If you leave it till later in the trip then your feet will be tired and sore and the last thing you want to do is stand! Also another tip is to pre book! We saw a group almost getting turned away as they didn't have the right documents to join the group and they weren't expecting more people. If you pre book the company can cater for you- also make sure you bring your passports as they do take copies of it on the day.

Also- do the tour with an open mind. Try everything, if you don't like it (which i doubt) at least you can say you tried it.

I just happened to find this tour but turned out to be a great happy surprise.

It was 130 MR for 4-5 hours, limited to 10 people per tour so that they can keep the tour quality and customer satisfaction. (The tours are twice a day, morning and the late afternoon) So go early as possible for booking and make your stomach available enough for lots of food samplings ;-)

I first thought it was run by the government or some public body but it was not....actually the local people who have professional mind in guiding guests from around the world.
Mixture of the city history, cultures of today, local foods at hawkers/local cafe, street foods, traveling on foot and train (LRT).
Foods can vary from the time to time. It was Indian foods, fresh local tropical fruits from the road stands, freshly made soy milk, nasi lemak (coconut flavored rice wrapped by the banana leaves), curries, teh tarik (milk tea), satey (BBQ), banana tempura snack, etc.....

Nothing fancy...casual but really cool.....I can visit twin towers or any other attractions prepared by the government but this is done privately, by locals who really love this town and wish to reserve the local heritages to the next generation. It can be also recommended for local Malaysians....

Not recommended for children/wheel chaired people who are good at long walking.

Unlike almost everybody else who just seems to pass through KL, we decided to spend a total of 8 days there and we did all sorts of tours during our stay. This particular tour was the best by a country mile and the 6 hours we spent with Erina were simply awesome. There's no other way to describe the experience. Erina is so knowledgeable and informative and she possesses a real passion for the country and heritage she clearly loves. If you do just one tour while you're in KL, you really can't go wrong with this one. The food is great too.

Many thanks for a wonderful afternoon & evening Erina. We really hope to see you again. Best wishes from Manila, Sean & Jacky

This tour became #1 on the Trip Advisor list when it was shorter, free, and didn't involve food. The Malaysia Heritage Walk is now the Eat, Pray, Love tour and it costs about $100 US for two people. We were greatly disappointed and regret that we were swayed by the Trip Advisor #1 rating.
