Very far from the Merdeka Square, you need to ride taxi if you want to go here. Unless you are a backpacker, you can walk from Merdeka Square to this museum for 40 minutes. Very impressive buidling and free entrance. You will see the different coins and bills of Malaysia and you will learn how money evolve in this country. Aside from Malay money, you will see different bills of different country. I am so impressed. After visiting the museum, you can take you snacks at the ground floor and buy some souvenirs.

The BNM Museum and Art Gallery is situated in Jalan Dato'Onn. Reachable by lrt (Bandaraya Station) or komuter service (Bank Negara Station) with 10 minutes walking distance, visitors may also drive and park at the basement with RM5 fare per entree (FREE parking on public holidays / weekends).

This place is a good choice of interest as the admission is FREE and there are 7 different galleries housed in the beautiful building of Sasana Kijang. The interactive features of each galleries complete with informative captions makes it easy and pleasant for any first time visitors to explore every single floors of the museum.

The souvenir shop also offers a wide range of affordable and interesting goodies selection. Even the Museum Cafe serves the cheapest and delish coffee in town and of course with various choices of snacks.

So if you happens to be in the heart of KL not knowing where to go just stroll over to Jalan Dato' Onn and 'Waze' for Sasana Kijang for an unforgettable experience in BNM Museum and Art Gallery.

This is much, much more than just a museum of currency. It is absolutely world class in scale, but is also world’s fair level in the creativity and pizazz of presentation.
The topics covered are ambitious: history, economics and art. The achievement is sensational. interactive, multi-visual and slick. It spans three floors, four if you included the gift shop. It tackles the history of world economics, explains the unique and inspiring nuances of Islamic financing, presents the history of money in general, and of Malaysian currency in particular and displays the distinguished collection of Malaysian and Southeast Asian art held by the nation’s central bank.
A bit hard to get to and taxi service not available, so be as modern as the building and exhibits and use Uber or other modern alternative, but don’t miss this hidden gem!
An interesting tidbit, the national currency is called the Ringgit which is an obsolete term form “jagged” in Malay. It pays homage to the serrated edges of the Spanish “pieces of eight” used during the Portuguese colonial era. That’s just a taste of what you’ll discover.

The kids gallery at the ground floor of the money section is very good and exciting. The entrance is free. This museum is very big and it as all sorts of world currencies displayed there. On the ground floor there is a cafe serving a wide variety of snacks, cakes and drinks.
The million-ringgit money tunnel at the entrance is amazing and many kids and people anxiously watch them. There is a really fascinating history of the various forms of currencies in Malaysia, and the art of banknotes. It was also eye opening to see all the different coins used in the past sultanates and the currency used in Southeast Asia and Malaysian during Japanese occupation.
It is very pleasing to see the special exhibition which showcases Malaysian artists' paintings. The model kids bank is great too as kids get to fill in cash deposit /withdrawal forms and play pretend at the banking counter. The interactive games stations in the museum are well designed and engaging.Kid love the money printing section where we can print some fake sample notes with stamps. Kids would also enjoy the coin tracing activity using crayons. There is also an art gallery at the top floor.
The visit was entertaining and educational. The staff is so well informed and helpful that it made our visit in bank museum so entertaining. In short, the gallery is well thought out and designed for kids.

We made the mistake of trying to find the museum by using the KL walks and tours map given to us at the Tourist information office.
However, what we should have done is carefully read the previous review and followed it! I also note that the map on TripAdvisor also takes you to the same, incorrect place as the map.
It took us nearly an hour of walking around asking people until we found it, but the photos on this site areccorrect and it is a stunning building.
We were subdued by the time we got there, and amazed at how often we have struggled to find attractions KL. Why are they never signposted? Are they trying to keep them all secret?
My husband says it is to encourage all tourists to always use taxis, but that is a shame as coming from Europe, it is lovely to be able to walk around in the sunshine in the middle of winter.

From the Bank Negara KMUTER station, exit to the northwest. Walk north (uphill) on Jalan Dato Onn following signs for Memorial Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The road is excellent with wide sidewalks. At the top of the hill, the road curves to the left and as it curves you will see the large mostly-glass Financial Services Resource Centre building on the right side of the road. Inside this building is the Bank Negara Museum (also known as Muzium Matawang). Total walk from KMUTER station to Bank Museum is approx. 650 meters (2100 ft) and about 10 minutes.

THE MUSEUM IS FREE. The museum has 4 floors of excellent content:

Ground floor: Children's Gallery
Level 1: Islamic Finance Gallery; Economics Gallery; & Bank Negara Malaysia Gallery
Level 2: Temporary Gallery; & Numismatics Gallery
Level 3: Art Gallery

My favorite gallery was the temporary gallery which had a stellar exhibit on maps featuring countless old world and regional maps and detailed history and explanation of each one. See pix. The art galleries were also excellent. My only complaint is that some of the lighted cases in the numismatics gallery would not illuminate when I pushed the "push here for light" button. Perhaps they were unplugged or perhaps they need maintenance. Regardless, this minor fault is not enough to detract from the overall experience, which is definitely 5 stars.

We are not Muslims so we didn't quite know what to expect - but we were soon astounded by the history, the artefacts, the architecture and the mosaical patterns that belong to no other race/religion . The world of Islam stands by itself - it is VERY different from the European Western character we were used to - Islamic art, writings, clothing, rugs, ceremonial weapons, pottery and silverware has an ambience all of its own. There is an entrance fee. The building is air-conditioned, there is a restaurant and there are three floors in a huge complex. Nearby is the National Mosque of Malaysia.

I honestly didnt know what to expect from my visit at first, my main reason for going was that it was free, when i learned it was essentailly an economics museum i was very skeptical, but was soon very pleasantally suprised.
Never before has the phrase "money in all things" been so skillfully illustrated. From the history of commerce starting in neolthic times, explored on a bike you pedal, to the examples of Malaysia's currency during its beginning, colonized period to present
