Dogs not welcome
Dec 2020
The park is nice, but dogs are not welcome in certain areas of the park. I don't go back because I can't bring my dog.

Teeming with Life-- Animals, Plants, and People
Aug 2020
This is my favorite park in the area and has been since I was a child. But this review is specifically for those visiting during the COVID-19 pandemic: I found it harder to socially distance here than at other local parks.

Though the boardwalk is pretty wide, this isn't really a place to just keep a steady walking pace. You'll want to stop and look for wildlife or watch birds or set up to take photos. While I was there, the park was packed with people and it was hard to maintain a safe distance from others. Avoid peak times and weekends if you can. When we went (10:30 AM on a Sunday), the entire parking lot was full and we had to park on the road-already a bad sign.

That said, it's so popular for a reason. This is a GORGEOUS wetland environment with all kinds of birds, amphibians, turtles, and more! It's such an astonishing sight so close to DC. From the wide open views of the wetlands to the beautifully constructed boardwalks and observation tower to the stunning forests and informative signs, it's like the ideal park!

Another note for visitors: there isn't much of a picnic area here. We brought a picnic and discovered that their picnic shelter had no tables (some families were sitting under it on blankets). We opted instead for a cozy, shady bench near the closed nature center-- but we'd recommend eating before you go!

Jogging

It’s a beautiful place, fresh air but short trails. Jog and walk took just 30 mins. Not far from DC area.

An oasis in a heavily populated area

A wonderful place to enjoy nature by walking through a wetland. A boardwalk allows you to get close to wildlife without disturbing them. You will see birders with binoculars and long lenses at various points, so bring one or the other or both and enjoy.

I didn't know places like this still existed.

We came here with a friend who lives in DC. I thought we were just going for a walk in a park.
I have never observed a wetland so alive. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Mergansers, wood ducks, bullfrogs, snapping turtles, muskrats, a beaver lodge AND the beaver, cranes, hawks, owls... It was complete sensory overload. At one point, the water in one of the ponds was roiling and boiling. I stood to watch for a while; there was obviously a fight to the death under water.
There were wildlife photographers scattered throughout. All were very friendly, and if you ask them what they are seeing, they will guide you a little with their advice.
For me, this few hours at Huntley Meadows was the highlight of a 12 week trip through the USA.
Huntley Meadows is an absolute jewel, a garden of eden. It is a must-see if you are in the area. Be patient, be quiet, and let the world as it was meant to be wash over you.

Take in a Monday morning guided bird walk
Nov 2019
Every Monday morning, at 7 or 8, depending on the season, experienced birders lead a walk through the wetland boardwalk, where you see both birds and other natural phenomena. No experience necessary, but bring your binoculars.

Huntley Meadows Park is a great place to spend time in nature relaxing and taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the traffic and crazy area.

Hiking at Huntley
Dec 2019
I like to take serious walks with my dog - maybe 5-6 miles per day. Huntley is one of the few local parks where we can do this. It is almost wilderness once you get away from the paved trails and boardwalks.
Huntley is marshland. Many of the trails are very wet - either wear waterproof boots or just get used to walking in wet shoes/sox. It’s worth it.. Huntley has a wide diversity of both flora and fauna. I have seen coyotes and wild turkeys. Lots of snakes. Beware of copperheads and poison ivy.
On weekdays, you can spend a couple hours without seeing another person. This is just one great park

Meander through the meadows
Jan 2020
The family visited this park and was impressed with the abundance of wildlife that could be viewed and photographed everywhere. It was an easy walk along the trails and could be done by most people. The visitor centre staff where really helpful and provided additional information about the park. The only negative comment was that some visitors had their dogs off leash on the trails that clearly asked that people don't bring their dogs into the park and/or let them off their leashes.
