I would give this tiny little oasis a fourth dot if it was not for the place being directly underneath the flight path to Reagan Airport. So: Every 90 seconds or so you get a close look to and a thundering roar from 737's and A319's. The island isn't much but it a green spot in the middle of the... More

A surprise to find this peaceful spot so close to DC. Parking may be a challenge so get there early. An easy, flat hiking trail so you can bring young kids.

Lovely place to enjoy the peace and serenity of nature just minutes from DC. Trails are mostly shaded through the woods, some go down to the water's edge and some are on boardwalks crossing over a marsh area. Relatively flat, easy trails. Upon arriving on the island there is a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt. Free parking right next to island,... More

The very loud noise from the frequent (every couple of minutes) airplanes flying over on their approach to nearby National Airport totally ruined what is meant to be a peaceful sanctuary and homage to nature. We could not hear each other speak, and by the end of the walk, I had a headache! Bring your earplugs...

I've spent a little time in DC, but I've never even heard of anyone visiting this tucked-away spot. It's a pretty nice location. It has a decent little trail network and a nice memorial to Teddy Roosevelt. You can combine it w/ a longer trek along the bike path along Arlington.

I really was glad that I walked this far (6 miles one way). The tribute to Roosevelt is touching even when there isn't water. The walk around the island was interesting from a historical standpoint and a bit telling how off the beaten path this fitting monument is. Swamps cover much of the isle and while in winter that's not... More

One of my favorite spots to go for a quick walk and it's rarely crowded. It's also a nice place to watch the sun set, look out over the Potomac, and get a different view of D.C.

Hard to get to. You must go north from the 14th Street Bridge onto the GW Parkway. Just after you go under Memorial Bridge the park will be on the right. You must get across the merging traffic from the Memorial Bridge. After you leave the park be sure to merge and get into the left hand lane, if you... More

Bring your dog on a leash. Park in the too small parking lot and enjoy this island oasis on the Potomac. There are no eating facilities so bring a picnic. Enjoy the views, Talk to the fisherman.

A relaxing place to visit in the close to the city, a place to relax and get close to nature away from the hustle and bustle.
