The Temple has amazing views, over the coastline. Steep incline to reach this temple, wear walking shoes.

there's a video that you can play that describes a bit about the temple and the significance but unfortunately it is in Japanese Language. I was lucky I went with a Japanese friend so that made my visit more memorable.

Came here to see hydrangeas in June but the hydrangea path, or "Ajisai Sando" [あじさい参道], is under construction until 2017 sometime. The temple itself is nice but very small, just a few minutes from Enoden [江ノ島電鉄]'s Gokurakuji Station [極楽寺] which is next to a slightly bigger temple with the same name - not a whole of hydrangeas there either. It's about a 15-minute walk to Hase-dera [長谷寺] which is crowded but has lots of hydrangeas.

That's why you are in japan, right? Ok, also some exhibitions, food and shopping, but somehow i felt this is the real face of the country.

Jojuin Temple is 5 minutes walk from Gokurakuji station. It takes around 1hours 17min or so from Tokyo station to reach Gokurakuji station. This temple is famous for beautiful hydrangea on both sides of its stairways. Best time to visit is in June.

We went here quite early in the morning (before 0830am) to avoid the crowd. There is no entrance fee to enter the area where hydrangeas are. From the highest stairway we can see the ocean in the distance. Both sides of the stairway were full of colourful hydrangeas. I guess this place won't be worth visiting after hydrangea season.

Recommend time of visit in Hydrangea season: before 0830am so you can take good pictures of yourself without any unwanted people in the frame.
