I got to Tokeiji Temple early in the morning (8.30 am) and had the place pretty much to myself, which was very lovely. The gardens are great. I didn't get to see the treasure chest because it only opened at 9.30 am, but I enjoyed...More

As one of the first temple I have seen after leaving the train at Kita-Kumakura, I could not resist and visited it. Relaxing and quiet even when other major temples get crowded with tourists.

This Zen temple was formerly a nunnery and refuge for women, and only women were allowed on the grounds. Now, for 200 yen admission you can spend time in a peaceful hilly spot , not crowded , planted with carefully tended flowers, bushes & impressive...More

Tokeiji is very short walking distance from Kitakamakura station. You climb some stairs to the entrance and pay 200 yen. The temple grounds are narrow, and you keep thinking you've reached the end, but the grounds continue into the mountain. The grounds are perfectly manicured...More

The temple is small and look pretty similar to the other ones in Kamakura, but step in the backyard and you'll find pretty nice, old zen cemetery, located in a shady forest. Ask staff for grave of D.T. Suzuki - famous Zen master who was...More

Drop by if you are passing but don't come on purpose as it is a smaller and less interesting temple than others. I liked the backyard with a cemetery and beautiful landscaping.

I visited this small temple as part of a Kamakura tour with Tokyo Way. The group went to Tokeiji after visiting the nearby Engakuji. This smaller temple is a companion temple, originally opened by Engakuji's head monk's wife. The temple itself is rather small, but...More

Tokeiji Temple (I suppose it would be a convent in Western terms) is a satellite temple of Engakuji Temple, on the opposite (west) side of the road from the main temple. It was founded in the 13th century and during the Edo period it was...More

The real hidden treasure at Tokei-ji temple is the gorgeous wooden cemetery towards the back of the temple grounds. It's amazing to see how everything is built around nature, as opposed to nature growing around the family graves and footpaths. It's an excellent place to...More

The Tokei-ji temple is much smaller than the nearby Enjkaku-ji complex, and not really worth the admission fee to the casual visitor. Famous for its gardens (as well as the ability for ladies to have historically petitioned it for a divorce), November was probably the...More
