We arrived just in time to see nine barges going through the Lock and Dam system. We have stopped at many of the locks and dams along the Mississippi this one was unique because it has an overpass that goes over the railroad tracks so I was you an excellent view.

Climb the stairs and stand right by the lock and dam to watch the barges and boats go through. Very interesting and beautiful view.

It is so cool to watch the huge barges go through the lock and dam. I wish I lived closer so I could take my grandsons more often.

My kids were in heaven. The train bridge was awesome to go over unless you were terrified of heights like my youngest child and husband. Chatting with barge folks was awesome. Highly recommend to all.

You can see it from the main drag in Alma.....highway 35. Or, you can park and walk closer. You can see where the channel is by looking at the can buoys marking it. A virtual playground for boaters upriver of the lock and dam which is attended to by the Army Corps of Engineers.

It is just a familiar interesting part of our history and settling this country. Our dams were an important of taming the Ole Mississippi.

We happened to arrive just as a tug boat with 9 barges was starting to go through the lock. It took well over an hour, but was very interesting to see, especially for a land-lubber! There are some educational posters showing all the locks and dams on the Mississippi from St. Louis to St. Paul

I love this stop. It has been a favorite place of mine since I was a child. The lock and dam is next to the railroad tracks. There's a bridge going over tracks to get to viewing platforms to watch barges, boats, and River boats lock through. When a train goes by the bridge vibrates. Below the bridge there is... More

We were lucky enough to get to view the lock and dam in action as a houseboat was traveling downstream. We range in ages from 10 - 67 and we all enjoyed watching and learning!

Love to watch the trains from the walkway that goes over the tracks to the dam and locks. Can watch boats and barges moving through the locks, with the water levels changing.
