The church is very beautiful, very golden. According to tour guides, it is the church that contains more gold than any other in Brazil. It's worth visiting.

What can I say that hasn't been said? All the hundreds of carvings are covered in gold leaf. They're not in particularly good repair, but still ornate. The church is built in "colonial style" and finished in the mid 1700s. The alter is magnificent and the cloister has 37 blue and white large tiled mosaics from Portugal. If you're in... More

Wonder example of the best in baroque churches in Brazil. Beautifully maintained. Docents were available to guide visitors if wanted. We chose to go around by ourselves and were given an explanatory leaflet in English which gave the history of the church.

A historic protected structure by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage. It is an important sample of Baroque art, but the most important characteristic of the church is its fabulous inner decoration, mostly executed in the first half of the 18th century. All surfaces inside - walls, pillars, vaults and ceilings - are covered by golden sculpted gilt... More

The main Cathedral is closed because of renovation, but Church San Francisco (St. Francis), is open (but they CHARGE about $2 US for a church) but truly spectacular. St Francis is the most eclectic decorated church we have ever seen in the new world or in Europe (but yet something like what we have seen in Thailand). The style of... More

lovely church - with significant historical significance. Make sure to stroll the entire courtyard with the ancient Portugues tiles - I only hope they are restored before the environment destorys them.

This over-the-top Church is simplicity itself in the courtyard where gracious colonnades are complemented with hand-made blue tiles imported from Portugal when the church and convent were being constructed at the beginning of the 18th Century (although it took many decades to complete). Inside, however, the rich and highly ornate gilt carved wood is both dazzling and somewhat overwhelming. The... More

The São Francisco Church and Convent of Salvador is situated in the historical centre of Salvador.
