We went on a daytrip to Lopes Mendez beach during our stay on Ilha Grande. It is the most famous beach, but it was not overly crowded. You can get there with a boat trip and a small walk. The beach is very large and...More

After a 20 minut walk in the rain forrest, we came to this beatiful beach. Even thoug the waves were big, it was possible to play and have fun in the water. A lifeguard was watching all the time. There are no restaurants or bars,...More

Great (slightly challenging!) walk from Abraao to Lopes Mendes. Recommend leaving early in the day approx 10/11am so that you can spend time at the other beaches on the way (e.g. Praia dos Palmas) which are beautiful and a lot less crowded. Lopes Mendes is...More

Nice beach - one of the many of the island. It is around two-hour trekking on foot from Abraao - or 1h boat ride (15 Reals) each way. One of very few beached suitable for surfing. However there are only a few options to stay...More

Lopes Mendes is a really beautiful and wide beach. I say it, because in Ilha Grande there is a lot of nice beaches but with no much space for the crowds of turists. It is possible to walk from Vila do Abraao to this beach,...More

You need to spend some time there to find out how amazing place it is. Walk along the beach and let it go. On the end of the day you'd wish to stay longer.

This indeed is an absolutely stunning beach. It's enormous as well so no matter hat it gets busy you can still find a spot for yourself if you walk a bit. The only downside is the fact that there are no bathrooms of any sort...More

The beach was beautiful. When walking onto the beach from the trail you will find the more crowded area. The surf was high and the water temp was cold. However, if you walk to the other side, there is relatively no one there and the...More

This place would've got 4 stars if I hadn't had to hike a full 20 mins up & down steep hills to get there. Which is difficult in very high heat! Then of course the hike back... and then the 40 min boat ride back...More

Hello, I have some questions for you about IIha Grande. We are staying in Rio, during carnival, but we will be in Rio for a total of 9 days. We have a group of 8 adults. I have read some things about taking a tour to IIha Grande, but not sure which one or which part of the island to visit. Some of the tours do not mention if you get to relax on the beach. Do you recommend taking a tour or getting our own private boat? Which parts of the island should we go to? I have learned that there are many. We like relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, drinking, and eating lol... Is there a water taxi we can take once one the island to get around to other parts? About how much R$ does it cost for a water taxi? And finally do you know if its worth taking the ferry?

hi Sean, I can't much help with your questions to be honest. We booked a transfer from Rio with Green Toad bus company, it included the boat crossing from Jacarei and was all pretty good. We didn't do any private tours on... More
