Just like her neighbor (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé), this church might seem a bit simple from the outside (as most churches around downtown Rio) but the inside is definitely impressive considering when it was built and trying to imagine what it was like back then... It's definitely worth including in a walk around the area,... More

Located on the flagstone square Praca XV, is one of Rio's finest churches, Igreja da Ordem Tereira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo. On a brilliantly sunny, hot and humid August afternoon we entered the cool, dark space and after a moment for our eyes to adjust to the light levels were dazzled by the massive opulent interior with... This is not a place we would have gone to had we been on our own, but the tour guide suggested it was well worth a visit. How right he was! The main door was locked but access was available through a side door when even our Brazilian guide had difficulty confirming that we could actually go inside for a... More

I saw it from Praça XV, when my private tour guide explained its historical significance. But before taking me there to see its interior, he let me pass under Arco do Teles and walk through the narrow lane called Travessa do Comércio. This experience made me feel like going back 100 years. So when we walked into the Old Cathedral,... More

Nossa Senhora de Monte do Carmo is a remarkable church, and the most important element of a Carmelite complex, including a convent and the Third Order church next door. Carmo was, for most of the glory days of Rio de Janeiro, the city’s cathedral. It’s still referred to by locals as the Antiga Sé, the old cathedral. It only lost... More

There are a lot of churches in this area and against the others this seems somewhat plain. That said, there are still some wonderful paintings and architecture and a silver alter to look at

Another important place of the history of Brazil - old cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, where for example Pedro I and II were crowned! I was surprised by the architecture, decoration and beauty of the cathedral - it reminds me Europe with South America influence - simply amazing. You can visit almost every room - this is something unusual. I... More

The church where several kings were crowned has been beautifully restored. It is the best site around the Praca XV square in Rio which is where the Portuguese kings ruled from.

This is a very nice surprise hidden in the heart of Rio. For many years I have heard about this place, where two Brazilian Emperors were coronate and one Brazilian princess got married, but I never had the opportunity to walk in. Beautiful, lots of history, lots of details on the architecture and decor. Definitely worth a visit, many “Cariocas”... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
