It was my last day in Rio and I got to visit the Favela. I did not follow a tour because they required at least 2 person to form a tour but I was just travelling alone. If there is just 1 other person who wanted to visit on that day, I could have joined that person and form a... More

I liked the tour, it was very informative since the "pacification". Place was brightly painted and lots of cables everywhere. Was able to tour one of the homes as well as check things out from a roof top. The open sewer was pretty gross, but it's really to be expected. The guide pointed out a very large Medical Clinic that... More

This was one of the cheapest tours around and guide was really great. He actually lives in Rocinha and was able to tell us all about the community and how they live. At no point did any of us feel like we were on a safari staring at the locals, which I had originally thought may be the case. He told... More

I loved going round the Favela's. We went with a tour but I don't think it was really necessary. I wasn't at all intimidated. We were called 'Gringo' at one point but it was just a bit of fun as far as I was concerned. The hotel we were staying in was facing the beach and the favela's were on... More

We went with a tour, which brought us through some narrow alleys to a house on higher ground. The way up is quite steep and comes with irregular steps. There we have a very good view of the area. We were presently surprised to note that the favela has electricity & water supply. Some houses have air-conditioning.

We did a walking tour of Rocinha with favelatours.org, an NGO that seeks to introduce tourists to the largest favela in Rio. We booked via email with Zezinho, a Brazilian/American who moved back to Rio after spending decades living in the States. We had a young, energetic, and knowledgeable guide Carlos, who picked us up at our hotel and took... More

I was pleasantly surprised by this tour as the favela was in much better shape than I expected with electricity and water in most houses. The people were also very nice and it felt like a safe place to be in with a guided tour.

After trip was booked via Viatour an agent called to check with me because my hotel was not on their pick up route. They sent a guide to pick me up from the hotel and met with the group to start the walk. I was very pleased with this service. Tour was fantastic, I never felt safer in a city…... More

We visited the Rocinha Favela by private Taxi after asking around and finding a taxi driver that spoke English and had connections in Rocinha, although this is most likely one of the most open to the tourist Favela's it is still not somewhere that you should freedom walk. Rocinha is home to ~200,000 people and the area is up on... More
