Seeing Rochina (pronounced Hosina) with Zezinho is a once-in-lifetime experience. I can't recommend it enough. Having walked through several informal areas around the world, this one is the most interesting because it is nothing like the media portrays it and walking around with Zezinho will...More

My visit to Rocinha was quite an eye opener. I have heard of Favelas however never knew they were basically self goverining neighborhoods (electricity, water, schools, banks, restaurants, etc..). My tour guide was very honest and asked us not to take random pictures since the...More

We chose to do a day trip with Zezinho and our guide Luis because we wanted to see how a less fortunate group of people in Rio live. At first, I, as a young blonde girl was worried for safety reasons, but felt very secure...More

Feel like a local, walk, shop, mingle with the merchants, drink some traditional Brazilian drinks and be happy.

If you take public bus 538 or 539 the route takes you through the Rocinha favela. Neither the bus driver nor us enjoyed the ride. Follow government and police advice, avoid this area!

Do not advise anyone to visit. This is an area where drug dealers Patrol streets and Wars among heavily armed gangs are quite commonplace. This weekend, even though brazilian army had 950 Men trying to take Control, shots are heard and famílies are seeing leaving ....More

As we walked down intimate alleys between buildings and shops and under sagging power lines, I wondered about the lives of the people living here and Rocinha and for that matter all the other 750 favelas, especially the children. . Do I regret going? NO!...More

My perceptions of what a favela is were blown away. This is the largest favela in rio with 300,000 people. We did the favelatour.org walking tour with a local and got to see real favela life. Yes it has been pacified (police presence) but is still...More

I did not go with a travel guide. In the day time it is safe. You can visit one of the main streets, Calle 1, there are many shops there. There a some tour guides but you would need to look for that.
