Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

I love the ground floor of this market. You can buy food from almos everywhere in the world and eat it fresh. Many stands with fruits, dry fruits, nuts, meats, you name it. Its cheaper to buy things outside the market. I don´t like the eating experience on the second floor. Food is greasy and overpriced (some dishes). In my... More

This was my second visit to the Mercadao and I thoroughly enjoyed going there. Even though some areas are congested, the areas are still orderly and there are many willing vendors who are willing to let you try their samples (which pretty much filled me up and prevented me from buying any foods there). Some of the items are expensive... More

Huge market with an enormous variety, especially fruits and spices. Great experience on its own, but better coupled with a trip upstairs for the excellent and traditional Mortadella Sandwich.

Excellent tour for a Saturday morning. You will be amazed at the variety of fruits, fish and food available on the pews. The chopp is a bit pricey ($ 10), compared to other places. The mortadella sandwich and the codfish are unforgettable. There is no parking, better to go by subway. Closes at 6pm. The Municipal Market of São Paulo... More

Its a nice attraction for tourist but not for regular purchases. The builing has a nice architecture and you can have the luch for a good price. The zone is not really good because it's in the middle of Sao Paulo, to take care. You can go there by Metro or Uber.

I found there more than I looked for. The space is huge. I saw so many things for the first time here. So many kinds of fruits, vegetables, fish... wine, meat, cheese, a wide range of prices, for every pocket. I wish I could have stayed more, because, as a tourist, I think it is an excellent place to visit,... More

There are lots of places to buy anything and eat as well. They will offer you some fruit for free to buy it but be careful of the pricing, it could be more than you expect. You can find an small store to buy glasses, magnets and some stuff as traveler!

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
To truly know São Paulo, you have to start at the old centre, full of history and landmarks with stories to tell. Get a taste of local food at the Municipal Market, and if you are brave enough, head to the crowded shopping street “25 de março” for cheap deals on a wide assortment of items. Beautiful buildings in this area include the Post Office Building, Luz Station, Pagé Gallery, Pateo do Colegio and the iconic “Viaduto do Chá”. If you find yourself amazed by the local language, the Museum of Portuguese Language is the place to go. Cultural centres, like Banco do Brasil’s, also offer a variety of entertainment options. Finally, if you fancy watching a Gregorian mass with organ music, stop by São Bento Monastery on a Sunday morning.
