You can choose restaurants or food stalls, former and better but more expensive, the latter more fun and cheaper. Lots of interesting food for sale, especially meat-based. Lively, friendly atmosphere. We liked the bar in the middle of the food stall area., surprisingly good beer and even served Cointreau!

We visited here in December. Most of the restaurants and stalls were closed. Most of the restaurants that were open didn’t look as good as ones you can find in other areas. However, we did find some nice raisins and bought some good sweet bread here. Prices are very cheap and you can haggle for souvenirs.

A cultural experience. Great for an enjoyable evening walk, dining on local foods, and many interesting locally made souvenirs.

We enjoyed ourselves strolling this interesting night market with different types of things to see and food to eat; souvenirs, handicrafts, fruits, food, nuts, etc. Food vendors were very competitive. I cannot help forgetting the delicious lamb stick that we had, it was just sumptuous, grilled to perfection. The other dishes recommended to us were equally unique and good.
The seedless grape we bought from a senior woman in the market was very fresh and crunchy which we find it hard to come by during our trip to other cities.

I stayed in Dunhuang for 2 nights. The first night I stayed at a youth hostel right beside the Shazhou Market right in the middle of Dunhuang Downtown.
It was easy and convenient to find my way from the train station to Dunhuang Downtown. took the green shuttle bus from the train station and sat my way till the end and alighted at the bus terminal which is located directly opposite the Shazhou Market.
At night, I came out of my hostel and roamed the night market. It was another form of pleasure derived from traveling to remote areas like Dunhuang.
The night market is not rowdy like that in big cities where there are much haggling and shouting. The atmosphere here is peaceful, orderly, quiet and cold. The light at the market provides some degree of warmth for the visitors. The contents the market carry is also different from those in eastern cities of China. Here, you see more of the stuff popular with the west of China. The market is surprisingly clean.
It was the unique art and craft pieces depicting the scenery of Mingsha Shan that attracted my eyes. I observed how meticulously detailed, skillful and careful the craftsman carved the wooden art pieces stroke by stroke and I admired their talent. It was impressive and make very good souvenirs.
There are quite a number of stalls selling dry food stuff like raisins, nuts, red berries, almonds, wolfberries, dates. The supplies probably came from Xinjiang province which produces in abundance grapes, nuts and dates.
The Night Market is not very large and I only spent about an hour or two roaming my way among the stalls. The air is cold and the night market is a good place to spend the night meaningfully and felt the commercial air in this remote oasis city of the West of China.
As I strolled around the night market, I pondered how the night market during those ancient silk road days look like and how the commercial trading was conducted at night in this oasis town of Dunhuang.
I believe with the One belt One Road initiative and in times to come, Dunhuang night market may be different from what it looks today and may become more vibrant and dynamic and commercialized.

We picked up many treasures at the night market, and found an excellent place to eat just down an alleyway with many options. The secret is to stray from the main road and explore

if you have the evening free in Dunhuang , i would recommend going to the Shazhou night market. its lively , many stalls with unusual souvenirs or gifts. there is also lots of food stalls as well at both ends of the night market.
we enjoyed the evening out.
but the surprise was that at one end of the night market was KFC and also a western bakery selling lovely tarts and cakes. i think it was called Aili bakery, almost next door to KFC.

A good night market with several souvenir stands and shops. Most of the things being sold are common but picking through you can find a few good souvenirs. The bigger attraction is the food. Plenty of barbecue restaurants along the south of the market- just pick one and enjoy. Near the north end of the market , to the left (West) on a side street are fruit sellers offering delicious dried fruit for low prices. To the right (East) is a side street with stalls of street food and some restaurants. The roujiamo in the first stall is excellent.

Touristy, yes! But food is much cheaper than at any attraction.
Interesting, yes! A lot of local artists young and experience offered a wide array of handcrafts and souvenirs at a good price if you know how to bargain nicely.
Exception - terrible people were running some restaurants near the open square; because of the location, their services were terrible and money-driven; we were not allowed to ask questions about the menu and then kicked out from "Lanzhou Sister's Casserole" for wanting to order only one casserole to share. If you want to dine at a cheaper place with better service, go deeper into the food area left or right, all better than those mean places cashing in on their better location.

A great walk-about with lots of stalls selling touristy souvenirs and hips cafe around. Hate the smoking inside cafes though. But lots of good food stalls around.
