We arrived here taking a shared minivan from the North Gate of Dali: we were the only foreigners and nobody spoke English, but we asked the staff from our guesthouse to write in Chinese the name of the village. It was easy. We arrived before lunch and there was the market in the main square: we were the only tourists... More

The tour guy took us to a family-owned tie-dye fabric multi-purpose house. It can be a factory or show room or store or home. When we went there, no one came to greet us and over 10 ladies were very busy cooking at the back. The court yard was set up with tables . Later they even closed their showroom.... More

Better batiks for better prices than old town. But it's getting harder to find more interesting/higher quality stuff here.

We did not spend any time in the town, just went to one of the family-owned tye-dye fabric workshops. While it was interesting to see the process of making these textiles, and the finished products are amazing, this was one of the few places in our entire trip to China where I felt that we had been brought somewhere with... Nothing old here just new 30,000 sq ft shopping centers selling mostly jade, silver and traditional medicine at excessive prices. China has destroyed is past. New buildings but no modern bathrooms so you walk in pee and/or squat in very stinky bathrooms everywhere, even in many 3 star hotels. China is way behind Thailand, Vietnam and Laos when seeking foreign... More

While I am interested in fabrics, Zhoucheng is too in your face with very aggressive locals trying to drag you into their shops. Seeing batiks produced is interesting. Asking prices were 5+ times those asked in Dali Old Town. I suggest that you buy in the old town rather than enduring Zhoucheng. Not worth it.

I came here from XiZhou by taxi (very cheap), and the driver dropped me off at one of the tie-dyeing factories. From what I understood, there are many small, family-owned factories here. So I guess it doesn't really matter which one exactly you visit. Anyway, the place was nice and I bout some clothes which my family loved. They will... More

If you are looking at buying some local flavor gifts which don't take much space in your baggage, stopping in Zhoucheng is handy. There is one dying shop where you can see their techniques and buy at the lowest prices we saw in the area. They dye with flower petals and before dipping the cloth in the baths, they have... More
