Probably the best place I visited in Yunnan. It's getting very hard to find the genuinely old in modern China. Much has been demolished and, at best, rebuilt in Disneyfied fashion. The village of Shaxi is an exception. Very atmospheric. A documentary was being filmed there when I visited.

Shaxi is a reconstructed Old Town. It is less popular and undiscovered by most tourist. It retains its authentic architecture, the shops offer what tourists require and what locals need. I recommend this place to visit, if you have extra time.

Not the usual ancient town. So much of good vibes around with people walking, shopping and enjoying their time. Many interesting shops where to get local delicacies (coffee, meat and sweets). To spend there a whole afternoon, taking it easy

Absolutely charming. One of the best places we saw in Yunnan. Very protected, not invaded by tourist. Beautiful old square in the middle of the village with mountains at the back. We loved it !

This is a great old town. In a world of Chinese tour groups, it is also pleasantly lacking in them, which makes the experience for travellers much more authentic. You can haggle the prices down fairly well in the market, which is not geared towards 'Disneyland', its a proper market.

We spent two nights in Shaxi and visited the ancient town several times. The tiny streets leading towards the town center are lovely and welcoming. Once arriving at the center there are few nice coffee shops with good coffee (and less good cakes), and the whole outside seating is simply great and very pleasant. On Friday morning we visited the... More

I only stayed for one night in this small village, but found it utterly charming. The town square has a beautiful old tree and a temple. The streets around the square are filled with shops, but the shops are varied and are interspersed with tea shops and cafes. We stayed in a charming inn right on the square. Be sure... More

Very nice place to visit for a day, not full of tourists like Dali and Lijiang, a lot of authentic mud buildings. Has a few cafes and restaurants with chinese and western food but with relatively high prices for a small place with few tourists.

A friend who has lived in Yunnan for decades described Shaxi old town as having "what used to draw adventurers to Dali." He referenced the long, peaceful, star-lit nights, the small family farms, the intricate woodwork, and the pervasive sense of history. I am glad that places like this still exist. The temples 10 km Northwest are the most beautiful... More

Shaxi Ancient Town is both idyllic and free from the hassle of most local 'ancient' towns. There are a number of shops featuring local crafts, as well as very hard-working sellers belonging to the Bai people, setting out their wares on the street. The majority of people here do actually belong to the Bai minority. Shaxi is a little bit... More
