Our guide suggested hiking down from the grotto to Shaxi Ancient town and it was a great experience. The hike itself was very easy going on a well-paved path. There were lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the town itself. Once there we wandered around the streets, had excellent coffee in the main square and just generally enjoyed the... More

This little town may not be on many recommended tourist attractions or itineraries, but it's well worth a visit or a day trip out of Dali or Lijiang. The town is not big but retain many of the original architecture, Take a walk through the town and have a coffee facing the 'cinema' stage in the town centre, then walk... More

Loved this town - quiet, out of the way, and what Lijiang might have been like decades ago. We wandered the streets, had lunch on the main square, and hiked the hills. Don't miss the hike that heads towards the grottoes- about 6mi round trip, well marked. Start out from the village just to the north of the town, look... More

A lovely and beautiful place ! People are so nice, we felt so peaceful and relax in this town. At first,, we did not plane to stay for sleeping but we change our mind because of the city beauty.

Shaxi (沙溪古镇) is the real ancient town, locates between Dali & Lijiang, closer to Dali. If you are looking for the true colour of ancient town, this is it! Travel by hired car, is the best option to visit Shaxi. You have to hire the car with driver as tour guy. To get trust people, it would be better to... More

So I've been to Shaxi valley, including the old town in September 2016 for a week and in 2015. I was a chaperone for a school trip that flew into Lijiang and stayed for 4 days in Shaxi. After visiting the first time, the teachers on the trip were talking about returning to visit without having to be in charge... More

Shaxi is a midway point between Dali & Lijiang. If you're driving yourself, it'll add only an extra half hour to your drive, but it's worth staying for at least half a day. This old town is a more traditional, non-commercialized version of what you'd find in Dali & Lijiang. Preserving some of the original buildings, Shaxi shows its visitors... More

This tiny old town is one of my favorite old towns in Yunnan. Its authentic, quiet and very beautiful. Highly recommended for people who wish to flee the crowds.

Probably the best place I visited in Yunnan. It's getting very hard to find the genuinely old in modern China. Much has been demolished and, at best, rebuilt in Disneyfied fashion. The village of Shaxi is an exception. Very atmospheric. A documentary was being filmed there when I visited.
