Life in this ancient town Shaxi is of unbelievably calm pace. There are outsiders from other provinces who came & opened business here but those who managed to stay & settled here are the ones who love or adapted to the slow pace, hence retaining...More

Shaxi has long been when of my favorite spots to take foreign visitors to Yunnan. Especially in the summer when Lijiang tends to be rainy and crowded (and Yulong Mtn in the clouds), Shaxi with neighboring Shibao Mtn is a much better alternative. Smaller and...More

My partner and I have visited a few "old towns" in China but this was by far the most authentic. We were well advised to go on a Friday and so see the market, which was incredible. Though the town has a real local feel...More

A charming little village town, with a very hipster cowboy feel to it. Most tourists are local, each cafe and restaurant has its own unique design, a park and river give a respite from shops and cafes in the town. Oh, and lovely jingly horses!

This was a stop over between Lijiang and DaLi and wa interesting to know about the Tea Horse Road. Still today horses are here for you to hire and ride along the source of the Mekong River. Small quiet markets.

It is so rare to find preserved places that we were really under Shaxi's spell. We liked Dali and Lijiang old towns, but Shaxi is something else. It is small and charming, and the many guest houses and restaurants were seemed designed with good taste...More

First we visited Dali, then Shaxi and finally Lijiang. I would bypass both Dali and Lijiang to spend more time chilling out in Shaxi. The other two have too many visitors looking for restaurants and bars playing music so loud you would think that 50%...More
