Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province. It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans. A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images.

We stayed in Shuhe for three days in late December. Prior to that we were in Dayan for three days as well. I prefer Shuhe so much more than the Dayan old town. Its less commercialized and more relaxing. The narrow streets are running all around the town together with the cold water stream from the Yu Long mountain glazier.... More

Shuhe Ancient Town is not as commercial as Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe still keeps the original characters of old town, it was the important stop or resting town before Tea-Horse old Road (茶马古道), these days we call it as logistic centres. Very interesting place to walk around, you will see many people doing modern activities, such as drinking coffee and... More

We went to Shuhe expecting an authentic old town experience and instead we got a smaller version of Lijiang. I don't think the buildings were authentic and it was full of the same shops and restaurants throughout. Better to spend your time elsewhere!

A much smaller scale of Lijiang Ancient Town...took bus #6 (only RMB1) from the bus stop outside of entrance near the Big Water Wheel. More peaceful and picturesque than Lijiang Ancient Town where one can spend a leisurely 2 hours in this Shuhe town. The stream running through the town and the pond is quite an attraction.

A distance away from the city of Lijiang. Picturesque as Shuhe has both old and new architectures. Again, I was there during maintenance period, so be careful when wandering around this ancient city. Smaller walkways than Lijiang old town and calmer and peaceful as less density in term of people. Enjoyed strolling along the shops and cafes of lovely and... More

We stayed in Shuhe as we were advised it was more relaxing than staying in Lijiang and we were not disappointed. It really is a lovely place to just wander around.

Though a little more pristine that Lijiang old town, it is largely tourist-centered. The real treat here is the fact it's a popular destination for photo-shoots of couples about to be married. A festival of contemporary Chinese kitsch.

Pleasant town with all the tell tale signs of commercial tourism in China, also has some unique spots like the Tea and horse Museum within to check out. Some decent places to eat if you search. Good for a stroll if you have time but probably will not amaze you.

This town used to be a village and was built into what it was today by developers. Hence the buildings, though made to look like the Da Yan Ancient Town, all looked new. There's no entrance fees to this ancient town. The shops are pretty much the same as Da Yan Ancient Town but the scale of the entire town... More
