Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province. It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans. A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images.

Shuhe has much more personality than the Ancient Town. All of the little restaurants have live music. You can see all of the same shops and old style buildings with a much smaller crowd. We stayed in a small inn inside the old town and...More

...in Lijiang, only twenty minutes up the road! This is much more peaceful and less polished. Not a great to do or see as such but spending an afternoon sipping tea and listening to some live singing is the perfect antidote the throng further south.

Shuhe is gorgeous, meandering, relaxed, and relatively calm compared to Lijiang Old Town, which is a tourist nightmare completely surrounded by a modern and depressing new town. Shuhe remains a sweet town still mostly surrounded by countryside, and one can remain here for days and...More

Unfortunately, like Lijiang, Shuhe has lost its charm with the arrival of mass tourism. Too many restaurants and shops, BUT it is still more quiet than Lijiang.

If you do go to ONE ANCIENT city in Yunnan, make this the one. Yes it is a little commercial and touristy, but still retains a LOT of its authenticity. Every corner brings about new views of picture perfect postcard prettiness. From walking along the...More

We stayed at Shuhe for five nights and were delighted to discover that the ancient town is still as charming, albeit all spruced up after our last visit in 2003 but yet retain it's identity as an important stop in the Tea-Horse route. Having stayed...More

As received by many, very similar to Lijiang, just not as crowded and a more authentic feel. I liked that people live there and there are several gardens with farmers working them in the middle of the old city. Several cool activities like horse back...More

Aside from Shuhe Ancient Town being a perfect place to take in the local people and culture, our stay at the Bivou was xcellent. This inn is lovely. It is located right in the ancient town of Shuhe so you can walk to everything. The...More

This place is around one hour away from Lijiang, you can get a public bus here and then walk around 2km. It looks pretty, but is still commercialized and because is smaller, it seemed more packed than Lijiang. Horses and carriages give it a cool...More

Been to lots of old towns on this trip. Lots of things in common between them all, but there are some unique points here... Beautiful mountains in the background, excellent food, and not too crowded.
