The fort of Veliki Tabor is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of secular architecture in continental Croatia, with a unique monumental and authentic fortification structure. Situated at the top of Mount Hum Kosnicki, at 333 meters above sea level, it has dominated the Zagorje area for over half a millennium, during which time the architecture has blended in with nature. The impressive view from Veliki Tabor stretches over the entire Hrvatsko Zagorje area and part of Slovenia.

This zero-category monument is one of the most recognizable identities of not only Hrvatsko Zagorje but of Croatia as a whole.

Veliki Tabor castle is situated on a hill near little town of Desinić just 55 minutes of pleasant drive from Zagreb. It is thoroughly renovated and is great place to visit with children since it looks like a castle from the tale about Robin Hood or also reminds on Shakespearian Globe theatre. I recommend not to drive all the way... More

For those who do not like fast road, but rather ride the landscape of a country, then turned to the left in order to ultimately come to the right, the journey will lead them to Veliki Tabor. So have I, respecting the road signs and limited driving slowly come to this palace that once belonged to my noble ancestors. Although... More

Veliki Tabor is beautiful castle, and it's great experience overlooking the surrounding hills from there. The museum exhibition is small and build around legend of Veronika Desinićka. The museum is new and there is not really original interior. You can take a walk from Grešna Gorica to the castle, there is a trekking route, so then will be more content... More

The castle looks to be renovated very recently. The medieval characteristics of the castle are primarily visible in the main building structure with its round towers and battlements. Almost all interior decorations and other small details seem to be lost.

Impressive from the road. Has free grazing deer in fields. Could unfortunately not gain access and due to time limitations we didn't persue entering.

Most of the castle has been renovated with a few areas still to go. Interesting history which is told on information boards as you go through each room. Tragic story in places, but very interesting. Massive wine cellar (empty!) and barrels. Reasonably priced, well worth a visit.

We visit this while touring for a day on the north part of Croatia. This castle is very nice from outside and was very promising. The interior exhibition is good but text is not in english. The inside of the castle is extremely restaurated and does not keep the atmosphere you would expect from a castle.

Ate lunch overlooking this lovely site. Unfortunately castle has been closed since 2008 for renovations.
