It is a beautiful stratovolcano that is the worlds largest lava lake. It is a 6 hours hike and return is around 3 hrs. You stay in the summit shelters for the night. From the rim you could see and hear the churning Lava lake.

I agonised about doing this - I'm a walker not a mountain trekker, and not super fit (exercise three times a week). But in the end, I did the whole thing with a smile on my face. Yes, it's up, up, up all the way...More

Once in a lifetime experience, the only place in which you can only see a huge active volcano and how the lava moves around, feeling the heat. Absolutely beautiful

Was this one of the most physically challenging tasks I have ever done - probably; was the end result worth it - absolutely. Words cannot adequately describe the sensation of looking down at the largest lava lake in the world; the sound and the glow...More

Standing at 11,400 feet on the rim of an active volcano looking down at a huge lava lake was a great experience. Watching the churning lava far below was mesmerizing. Talking with fellow travelers during the hike and at the rim was enjoyable; although most...More

This was one amazing experience! It took us about 5-6 hours to get to the crater rim, and it was very cloudy and steamy most of the time we were up there. However, I managed to get a few clear images of the lava lake...More

Its an experience of a lifetime-trekking up the mountain and peering onto the caldera of a live volcano to see the massive lava lake bubbling away. Its dramatic at night when the entire sky glows red from the lava.. The trek itself is not easy....More

One of the most incredible travel experiences I've had. It's a 6 hour hike from the base to the top that can get quite steep and tiring at times. What you see at the top is one of the most unique views on this planet-...More

I wrote a review on trip advisor on Mount Nyiragongo dated May 17, 2017. I think it can answer most of your questions. I did the same thing that you are going to do, coming from Kigali. The National Park Service handled... More

Kigali to Bukima I think took us 5 hours total with border crossing and everything. Yes I would stay in Bukima before gorilla hike then head to Mikeno after gorilla trek and stay at Mikeno before Volcano hike. Both are great... More
