This is a well kept castle steeped in rather disgraceful behaviour by The Dutch and Portuguese in particular. Different times but how could religious people commit such heinous crimes against humanity. The Gate of No Return is an emotional expetisne. Just gaze out to sea...More

We went to the Elmina Castle with a tour group run by Transafrica, a tour group specializing in tours in West Africa. The experience was very educational, moving, and emotional. To see one of the many doors of no return and to learn how the...More

Elmina’s a bustling fishing town and the castle is at the far end of town. Not a lot going on but an interesting half a day wandering around. The castle is less busy than Cape Coast and fewer tourists. Still impressive and tells a horrific...More

Going there you will be transported in what was the hell for thousands of slaves: you may feel their cries and desperation, really impressive. Guided tour perfectly organised.

Very well preserved castle. The tour guides give an excellent potted history of the castle and its role in the slave trade. Avoid speaking or even making eye contact with the aggressive even menacing young men hanging around the entrance. They have a number of...More

Beautiful scenery from the fort, great tour guide, and the fort itself is in very good condition. It gives the visitor a clear glimpse of the living conditions of the slaves at the fort prior to being shipped around the world. If they survived the...More

Wonderful tour with great guide, but you have to be careful, as they can be very pushy. Ask for recommendations from people who have been before. The fort itself is in pretty good shape and it is amazing to think that it has been in...More

One of the saddest places you will visit. But well worth the visit. Tour guide spoke English well and was very knowledgeable. Important to learn this very sad part of Ghana history

When you visit Cape Coast people always wonder which castle to visit: Elmina's or Cape Coast's. The first one is the oldest and the second one is the biggest. I ended up visiting Elmina's and I wasnt disappointed. Although I believed I wouldnt be disappointed...More

9am -5pm. There are many tour guides, so wait time is minimal. They usually look for few people to join to form a group.
