The well-maintained fortress is 500 years old, built by Portuguese first for trading and then later slave trading. The GHC40 ticket includes a guided tour which is informative and saddening. Great learnings for those who know little about slave history like myself. Right by the...More

A visit to Elmina is well worth the trouble. It is smaller than Cape Coast Castle and a bit off the beaten path. It therefore tends to get fewer visitors. I've taken groups to Elmina several times of the years and the guides have always...More

You see the actual areas and castle in the colonial era of Ghana. Very educational and informative. I spent about 1 ~ 2 hours walking around this castle.

Plenty to see from the castle with the fishing boats retuning and over looking the town. Entrance fee includes a tour guide. It can be an emotional tour for some as it exposes you to the horror's of Slave Trading. This is a much better...More

I have been to this castle/dungeon about 4 times. Although I am technically from the Diaspora and my ancestors were the slaves they bought and sold I was never challenged at the entrance on whether or not I was a local. We were 3 in...More

Get a view on a dark chapter of human history, slavery. Elmina castle, millions of slaves were shipped from here around the world. Must visit when you are around. Good guided tour. Shocking stories.

As an African American this was a MUST for me. The tour guide was very informative. I found myself crying in the middle of the tour. Cape Coast is a beautiful place with an evil past. Awesome spot for tourist and students and really any...More

I received alot of great information on this tour, we were able to stand where my ancestors stood before being shipped out of this country. A little pricey for travelers GHS40 to get in but only GHS5 for natives of Ghana. Then they take you...More

Can anyone recommend a professional driver to get me to Elimina Castle from Accra? Also any recommended accommodation since I'm reading that this needs to be minimally an overnight trip? Thanks in advance!

I don't think you should make it a day trip. There are a few things to do in the area. Kakum canopy walk etc. I got the bus from Accra to Elmina and used Nana 024 283 2423 for my movement all around. However if you want him... More
