Semuc Champey is absolutely stunning and well worth the trek to get there! The pools have a stunning greeny turquoise colour and are very clear. You can see fish clearly and they are the ones that harmlessly nibble away at your feet if you sit still enough. There are a large number of pools and it is worth popping into each as most people stay on the top ones. The lower pools even have natural rock waterslides too if you like a bit of adventure! We did a day tour from Lanquin and this tour also covered a candlelight adventure into nearby caves, a couple of hikes and also a few jumps and swing rope into the river. The pools are visited in the tour after lunch and the one hour round trip hike up to the lookout. There are a lot of steps for this hike and a moderate work out, I wouldn't recommend if you don't have good knees. It is a rough 45min trip to get there from Lanquin standing up in a ute, but this is all part of the adventure. We purchased through La Poza River Lodge for Q195, however we later realised that other hostels are cheaper for the same tour. You could also stay at a hostel near the pools as well, however these are typically not as rated in TA as highly as others in Lanquin.…

nice scenery, coldish water, lots of people having fun and making the appropriate noises to go with it. Not really worth a detour, still, something different from all the Mayan ruins :-)

I absolutely loved Semuc Chsmpey! We went there early in the morning around 9 and hiked directly up to the Mirador (recommendable brcause later it gets quite warm and the hike is a little challenging) They ptovide locker which you csn use if you bring your own lock. Thw rock pools are incredible and it looks like out of this world. They have a sign which says you shouldn‘t use repellent, sunscreen or any other chemical products when entereing the water. This is rrally important to protect the health and therefore the color of the river- but noone enforces this rule which is sad. The lady at the entrance is also not really friendly but that doesn‘t matter to us. You can come and go during the day until 5pm if you keep your ticket. …

This is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and looks just like in the photos! We booked the Semuc Champey day tour with El Retiro and it was one of the best days we had throughout our entire trip. We communicated via WhatsApp and they were very quick and accurate with their responses. The price Q185 is fair considering there is transport, the cave tour and some tubing included on top of the park and two guides the entire day. This trip is not for the really unfit or faint hearted though. Even the ride in the jeep is adventurous (and exhausting) and the cave activity and various (optional) waterfall jumps are for adrenaline seekers. Would highly recommend for people looking for a fun, adventurous day out! …
