After a short time in India you become very familiar with the Hindu Gods and the various statues and stone relief carvings of them. The only thing that makes the caves on Elephanta Island different, and worth a visit, is that everything was carved out of the solid granite landscape. Similar to Petra, the caves were hand dug, rather than... More

A stay in Mumbai will be incomplete without visiting Elephanta Caves. These caves are located on Elephanta Island in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai, India. The Elephanta Island was so named by the Portuguese, after the statue of an elephant near the landing area of the island. However, the mass of stones comprising the statue were removed to the Victoria... More

You get the boat just by the Gateway of India. It takes just under an hour. When you arrive it is either a walk or a short dotty train journey - well worth the go. You then have to pay to got to the caves - you walk up a lot of steps - you can have men carry you... More

you can get to the Elephanta Island by boat from the India Gate, it takes around one hour, there you have to pay extra to visit the caves, in my opinion overpriced attraction, there are many stands with souvenirs and restaurants

If you only have limited time in Mumbai and/or are going to see Ajanta Caves or Ellora then I would definitely consider skipping the Elephanta Caves. The entrance is very expensive for foreigners and as the caves are rather underwhelming, it is pricey for what you get. You wouldn't be asked to pay these prices in Northern Europe. The boat... We took the afternoon boat and enjoyed the late day sunshine at the caves. Really excellent day out. go early. We arrived for a 10am boat but we were approached by a vendor trying to sell us other excursions. we were delayed by this for a few hours so beware of agents trying to get you to buy other excursions.... It's an amazing place with monkeys running around. Comical really. Great rock sculptures. Bit of advice...don't go during summer. It's almost 45degrees on the way to reach the island.

the overall experience is fine because you board a ferry to reach the cave island. Then you take a lot of stairs to reach the actual caves which are not maintained well. there is a lot of darkness inside. There are idols of hindu gods. you can appreciate the history of caves and how they were built
