There are only a couple of rooms to view, but interesting because of the 'bug pit' where the British army officer Charles Stoddart was imprisoned before his eventual execution. It is situated round the back of the citadel.

Although very impressive from the outside the inside is definitely worth visiting if only to see the infamous "Bug Pit" dungeon where the two British "Great Game" spies (Captain Connolly and Colonel Stoddart) were held for 3 years by Nasrullah the brutal Emir of Bokhara. Both were subsequently beheaded in the square in front of the Ark (after being forced... More

As most Bukharan museums, not much written explanation was given. It would have been interesting to hear e.g. what where the reasons inmates were jailed for, how long they stayd, etc. Howevever the cost wasn'bad either

The exterior of Zindan is impressive. With the exception of the Zindan prison, there is not much to see inside. The prison is infamous for its "bug pit" where two British spies were brutally imprisoned as part of the 19th century struggle for power in Central Asia in the imperial game between Britain and Russia for influence over this strategic... If pressed for time I wouldnt bother going inside as it is more spectactular from the outside, there is only around 3-4 rooms open and they are not that great. The jail cells are the royal camber are the highlights. We went with a guide who explained all the history for us, recommended if you do the same as there... More

Nothing special here, if pressed for time can be missed. 3 chambers to see and imagine how life was being locked up there .

Imagine history on this place: large gatherings of people for the events of the week/month/quarters, most of the time quite, dusty and hot. Do not miss to cross and see the fortress.

If you have a travel guide, you will hear a story behind this. Otherwise I would recommend you find out its historical background. It's a quick tour, part of the history of Bukhara.

Interesting place to see if you have read much about the Great Game. I recommend reading Peter Hopkirk's "The Great Game" for a good overview of this bit of history. Conolly, one of the officers who died in this prison, coined the term Great Game.

Walking to the prison that holds the "bug pit", Stoddard and Conolly's last residence, leads you through a neighborhood that makes you wonder if you have missed the turn. But then, the prison appears. Go in and you find the bug pit. Phew, not a place you would want to spend any time in ever. I found this place interesting,... More
