Located in Ninh Binh province 100 km southeast of Hanoi, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are two of the most picturesque spots in all of the north. For 41 years, from 968 to 1009 CE, Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam. Nearby Tam Coc is often referred to as “Ha Long among the rice paddies.” Visitors are conveyed by rowboat along the peaceful Tam Coc stream past green fields and the feet of mountains into the mouths of caves, where they encounter new surprises, like stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like gemstones just inches from the water.

This place is one of must-visit-place you should add on your plan. I traveled with my friends to figure out how Hollywood crew choose to shoot film "Kong - skull island" here. It is worthy to visit when travelling in Vietnam

We had a great day, probably the best in term of natural beauty / scenery. It is absolutely stunning, amazing and unique. And the rowers have that special talent to row with their feet...strange and funny to see !

This place is quite beautiful. I went cycling and then went on the boat which was amazing. The women row with their feet. Well worth taking a day out and doing this. Great experience

It was nice tour & really wonderful to see the nature. Experience nature at its best. The cycle ride and the boat ride was awesome. You can plan to stay overnight & relax or go to halong bay from there.

For $9 usd this was unreal. Even in the rain I was blown away. Incredible views. Jurassic Park and Skull Island. I thought this was better than Trang An because there are fewer tourists and it wasn't hot the day we visited. Two hours well...More

One of the most beautiful places in Vietnam. We avoided the crowds and stayed in a Hometsay in the area so it was great.

True to it's name, it's a boat ride through "three limestone caves", on a river that flows through rice paddy fields. Sounds like paradise? Well that's exactly what it is. Get their early morning to avoid the heat. It's a bit touristy with the boatmen...More

The Tam Coc boat ride is a wonderful experience. Many people have reviewed it saying they were harassed by locals on the water to buy snacks and drinks, Truth is there are a few boats at the turning point, but a polite and firm 'no...More

Please recommend a specific hotel and specific tour for Tam Coc. I see lots of reviews raving about the experience with very little about the specifics. Thank you, Sandy

Thanks Cardiff – your review is very useful. I am planning my trip to Tam Coc in early Dec. Where did you buy the tickets for the boat trip and how did you get there? We’ll be staying in Tam Coc overnight but not be driving so I am wondering if we need to book car transfer to travel around? Apart from the boat trip and Thrung Nham National Park, is there any other place in Tam Coc which is recommendable for a visit? I heard some ppl do cycling but as we are not good at it I'm afraid it would be tough... Thank you in advance for your information.

Hi there, you just buy the tickets in the little kiosk at the lakeside, just in the center of town. The fares are clearly displayed and you will be told in which boat to sit. It is well organised. No need to book before. To... More

Sorry for the delay. They have 3 seasons. Sept was the end of the season. So not entirely sure about May. Should be pretty good for picking
