About
B&J Diving Centre on Tioman Island has been established in 1986 and is run by a Malay/German/Swiss management team. It stands for quality and service without cutting corners on safety. B&J is a PADI 5 Star IDC Facility that conducts all PADI Dive Courses as well as daily dive trips to the best dives sites around Tioman Island. Tioman Dive Resort and B&J Dormitories are owned and operated by B&J. Certified divers join up to 3 boat dives per day plus night dives. The 2 morning dives bring you to dive sites in the vicinity of famous Coral Island, whereas the single afternoon dive will be at a dive site closer to Tioman Island. Distance by boat to the 20+ sites is between 5min to 20min. Group sizes for leisure diving and courses are always kept small with a maximum of 4 divers per PADI professional.

Heng is an exceptional dive instructor! He guided us through Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Nitrox Enriched Air Diver courses with unmatched expertise. Starting with zero experience, we are now confident advanced divers exploring depths of up to 30m, thanks to Instructor Heng.

Our night dive at the thrilling "Ghost Town" site was unforgettable. Instructor Heng’s meticulous approach ensured we were well-prepared with thorough safety drills and diver procedures, especially for boat dives. His instruction left us more organized and prepared than other divers on the boat.

Despite the modern alternatives, Instructor Heng went the extra mile to teach us traditional dive planning using the RDP chart. This not only enriched our knowledge but also boosted our confidence in our diving skills. Instructor Heng is profoundly responsible, knowledgeable, and professional. He made our dives fun, confidence-building, and skill-enhancing. He always held nothing back and was eager to assist and teach as long as we were willing to learn.

Given that safety is of paramount concern in a high-stakes sport like Scuba diving, instructor Heng’s strong emphasis on foundational diver skills ensured that we never put our lives at unnecessary risk. Our first dive trip was both pleasurable and enlightening, largely due to Heng's assuring presence and guidance.

Highly recommend Instructor Heng for anyone looking to become a confident and skilled diver. If you're ready to challenge yourself, his courses are the perfect opportunity!

I did my OWD and AOWD at BnJ under instructor Wendy, and I could not have asked for a better experience. I felt comfortable and safe. She also made the session really entertaining despite being strict about making sure we mastered each skill and really understood the task. You hear of dive centres that rush the course for the sake of passing students, but this is not one of those centres. Plus, doing the courses in the paradise that is Tioman Island is an added bonus.

This is my second time back at B&J, the first for my OWD certification, and this time I came back to get my AOW cert. I had the wonderful opportunity to learn under the wing of Wendy, who was an amazing instructor. Not only was she great at explaining different skills and teaching lessons with clear rationales, she was also extremely patient when it came to teaching practical skills. I definitely learned and took away a lot from this course and have become a better diver thanks to her.

B&J was also fantastic, I booked a course with them during ADEX (a dive expo), and the follow up emails were clear and helpful in setting up and finalising my diving trip.

Took the option to stay in their standard twin room accommodation, and was again set up in Tioman House Bungalows just next door to the dive centre. My stay with them this time around was more pleasant than before as it seemed cleaner and the bedsheets looked newer. Air conditioning was also nice and cold to help beat the heat. One major downside though would be the poor connection, mobile data is very weak in the houses, and the free wifi slows down at night when more people are connected, which might force you to go to the dive centre to use their wifi instead.

I took my OW in B&J Diving Centre Tioman which turned out to be a distressful course for me. It is my first time trying out diving, and my instructor didn’t make it a pleasant time for me.
In the end I only graduated with Scuba Diver (qualified to dive with a PADI professional to 12m) certification, instead of the Open Water Diver certification which I came for.

Tioman instructor - Alex from UK, a PADI Course Director

I left Tioman with a heavy heart but i still want to give diving another chance.
I signed up with Singapore Resort World Sentosa, a second PADI Open Water Diver course. Finally I graduated with the Open Water Diver certification.

Singapore instructors – Aiden and Ferdy (ex-B&J Diving Centre Tioman instructors).

What a coincidence to move from one B&J instructor to another B&J instructor but the teaching style standard was so different !!

Alex :

1) he is high ranking in the PADI world and from UK, perhaps he is not used to teaching entry level students or Asian students.
2) the OWC schedule is supposed to be 4 days but he concluded it in 2.5 days (2 days course and 0.5 day boat dives in the last morning).
3) Skills were explained but not in details and not giving enough time for me, beginner, to try it out. Group size is 2 for this OWC.
For example,
- Buoyancy : he only signaled downward thumb sign, breathe out sign and deflator button sign in the water. I have to figure out how to execute these 3 signs in the water and be buoyant. Conclusion I couldn’t. I was moving up and down in the water. He didn’t explain anything thereafter on land.
- Fin kicking : he only commented my kicking was atrocious but didn’t correct my leg movement. Conclusion I failed the Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascend because I couldn’t kicked myself afloat while orally inflating my BCD.

Aiden and Ferdy :

1) Both instructors were very patient,
2) They did land demonstration before we entered the water,
3) They sorted out all issues faced in the water individually
4) They repeated the drills until the whole group got it. Group size is 6.
5) Plus they taught the entire course in a light-hearted manner and we all enjoyed the learning process.
For example,
- Buoyancy skills : they explained that our lungs are the best BCD in the water. We practiced slow breathing in (5 counts) and out (5 counts) on land. We only inflate/deflate a small burst if the air in our lungs is not enough to keep us buoyant. Aiden (one of the instructors) personally came to me under water to ensure I did my slow breathing and showed me how to adjust my physical BCD to achieve neutral buoyancy. He would then move on to other students.
- Fin kicking : Ferdy (another instructor) would demonstrate how to fin kick and observe all of us in water doing it. He would correct each of us until we got it. For me, he kept saying "relax in the water, only when you relax then you can have a powerful kick". Finally, I achieved that powerful kick and both the instructors were very happy for me. I passed my Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascend this time because I can kick myself afloat this time while orally inflating my BCD. Ferdy was saying I kicked very fast to go up. Hah.

Got certified as Rescue and Night Divers with Wendy as our instructor, and was previously OWD certified with Mok last year. Had a wonderful time learning new skills, improving old skills, and enjoying recreational dives as well. Instructors and DMs were very friendly, efficient, and attentive to our needs. Highly recommend B&J Diving Centre to get certified!

Did AOW + nitrox here in just 2 days. Mok was a very proficient instructor who delivered the lessons clearly (in 3 languages no less). Safe, professional and thorough. Reefs in the area are buzzing. Highly recommend for a chill getaway to obtain certification or just recreational dives.

My daughter who recently turned 10 wanted to do an open water diving course and get her PADI, so she could join the rest of the family for future diving trips. We picked this place because it came highly recommended. We were not disappointed. We also opted to stay onsite at the resort. We stayed in a deluxe quad, a big room with a queen size bed & 2 single. It was perfectly located, 20-30 steps to reception, diving pool, bar and restaurants! It was clean and very comfortable and it had tea/coffee amenities in our room. Diving course started straight away. Her instructor was Shaiful, nicknamed “Bong”. He was great, easy going and strict when he had to. I don’t think he was prepared for her short attention span. She would get distracted by passing by animals on land to anything that moved in the water. He was patient with her and they got through the course without any problems. I was worried that she wasn’t mature enough to do the course, but it was fine. For anyone thinking of sending their kids, would be nice if they did it with siblings or friends of a similar age group. Nethertheless, she had a great time, because she received a lot of attention being the only child there. My husband & other daughter went on dives with other instructors and had a fab time - a quick shout out to Jay! There’s a restaurant right next to the bar, which we are at the whole time, it was just easy & relaxing. We had such a great feeling while we were there, the instructors are genuinely passionate about what they do, all so friendly & encouraging. I would highly recommend this place. Ask for Bong & Jay!

Had a great time when I took my OWD last year with Koh so I decided to come back this year to complete my AOW and brought my sisters along for their OWD.

We had Mok this time round and our experience was also nothing short of amazing. Mok’s attention to details were immaculate, with him around I knew my sisters were in great hands.

We were also thankful to have Acoy, Wiktor and the boat crew for keeping a look out for us when we went on fun dives.

Always a good time with the B&J team! Thank you all so much!

Been to this dive centre twice in the past. Always paid a deposit, never the full balance as with almost every other dive centre in the world. I normally do 10-15 dives but can never be sure. This time as previously I was asked to pay a deposit. Went in to pay it and was advised that as I was now on the island I would need to pay the full balance! Was advised they’d changed their policy due to non payers.

Firstly I don’t buy that! It’s really hard to leave an island without paying. For a start they’ve got your details and it’s a 2-3 hour ferry ride out of here with police at the other end. Who would risk it.

Secondly - customer service / loyalty. Returning custom has to have some value! Not at B&J apparently.

Done two previous reviews of this dive centre and feel a little let down to have to write this one. If you email it’s a deposit, it’s a deposit….
