About
St.Mary's church was founded in 1883 and it is now 135 years old as of 2018, the oldest church in Sandakan. The first church was created as a small wooden structure. Its history dates back to May 1883 when Monsignor T.Jackson, the prefect Apostolic of the Mill Hill, England, order of Missionary Priest, bought five acres of land on a hill to set up a mission. Together with Father Prenger, they built a temporary hut made of 'Kajang' and dedicated the mission to the Blessed Mother and named it St.Mary's Hill. Msgr T.Jackson then asked Father Pundleider to join Father Prenger in Sandakan( used to be called as British North Borneo) and together they opened St.Mary's school on July 24, 1883. The first school in North Borneo with its first pupils, five in all, housed in the kajang hut. By October on the same year, there was a proper hostel for the boys to stay in and a small church.

I get my peaceful when I sit down in middle of the church... so wonderful... it take 15 min by walk from town to St. Mary. Near church we can have a walk at Marian Mount. On top of Marian Mount we can view Sandakan Town. So beautiful... 🙏🏿🙇🏽‍♀️

This is the Dam at Mill Hill Valley at Marian Mount built in the year 1903 during Chartered Company era, British North Borneo collecting clean drinking water from Elopura River for Sandakan residents.

Many had witnessed & encountered healings & miracles at Marian Mount by catholics & friends. This is also a place where one can find joy & happiness, peaceful & quietness, prayers & healings, love & offerings.

Nothing touristy about this place at all, but just an average church. It's a bit of a walk uphill to get here from town, so get a cab.

1) This is a special pilgrimage site for all catholics & visitors.

2) A trip will not be complete for descendants of all POW-WW2 - death march while visiting Sandakan to witness how their ancestors at St. Michael & All Angels Church being watched by the Japanese from the other side of the hill.
