Perfect for 3 days. Great snorkelling from jetty. Did boat snorkel. Ask about need for wet suit (depends on whether there are jellies around). Don't be put off by army/police/coastguard presence - it's safe because they are there. Good range of food choices; peaceful apart from rich Chinese families who think it's ok to let their children run riot in the dining area and some geeks who think it's ok to fly drones around... Don't bother spending a fortune on the new on the water cabins. Ask for rooms 30 and above on the shoreline and you'll be over the water anyway!

We loved our 3 day stay on the island. It's a great place family place because everyone has something fun to do. My 7 yo enjoyed snorkeling with the turtles and reef sharks while my husband and I dove. The water clarity wasn't ideal this time of year (3-5m) but that's ok. The coral was still beautiful and we saw a leopard shark, sting rays, schools of fish and cuttlefish. The house reef is nice once you get away from the dock. The coral is a bit damaged west of the island, but not bad directly south (snorkeling site). My son had a great time digging in the pristine sand and watching the turtles hatch. We would definitely return when the visibility is better. I'd say the biggest advantage diving here is that there are no other divers besides the ones staying on the island with you. You don't have to worry about other dive groups trying to look at the same things.

Lankayan was our splurge. Yes, it is expensive. But the island is beautiful and the water is very clear. We were picked up from our Sandakan hotel at the appointed time and taken to a nearby port. For the price I was expecting a comfortable motor launch out to the island. But you are transported there in a speed boat (with twin 250 hp outboards) with armed military aboard for safety. The trip takes 1.5 hours and those on the right side of the boat got drenched. Once we landed on the island, we were briefed by a nice young man, whose English was not that good. We were taken to the gorgeous restaurant built out over the water, for a drink and more information. I couldn't wait to get into the water as it was so clear and we could see fish and turtles. Our bungalow was #12, large and comfortable, with a double and a single bed. There were shelves, hangars, tables, tea and coffee making equipment and a mini fridge. The bathroom was big with a tub and we got bath towels and beach towels. There was a large deck with chairs and a clothes line on the side to dry swimsuits. The island is small and you can walk around it in 15 minutes. There is a military post on the island so you feel safe. Meals are served in the restaurant buffet style. I will say that there was a large Chinese group there at the same time who piled all the fruit on their plates leaving none for others. Then they only ate half of it. What a waste. We rented snorkeling equipment from the dive shop and the staff showed us the best place to snorkel. The water was lovely . There was some nice coral and fish. I saw a moray eel, blue tang, parrot fish, some clown fish and much more. Visibility was good. But there were a lot of jelly fish to dodge. The second day we went on a snorkeling trip to a sandbar and two other stops. Visibility wasn't as clear as it was windy which stirred up sediment. There was nice coral and lots of fish including large grouper. At the next snorkel stop I saw a white tip shark. Around the island are so many turtles. And we got to see turtles hatching and released into the sea. Unfortunately the Chinese tourists didn't understand the workers requests and crowded around the baby turtles, not allowing others to see them. Signs in Chinese might help. Also on this small island is a conservation area with displays and videos, worth seeing. We were only there for two days, not long enough.

I understand why all of the reviews say that it is a beautiful place... the water is clear, sands a golden white and calm atmosphere, however this was our least favorite place on our 3 week Borneo trip and the most expensive by a mile! The negatives: - The boat ride was cramped and bumpy... not recommended if you have back or neck problems. - The arrival was long and tedious (we had to be briefed for over an hour before we were let into our room). - The room it's self is ok... wooden and slightly dark with only one window and no door for the bathroom. The outside shower is a nice touch however. Chairs on the terrace to relax, however with no cushions was not comfortable. - They are building 10 new luxury cabins over the water, so there is noise all day. As the island is very small (you can walk around it in less than 10 minutes) there is no where to get away from the construction noise. - Meal times were noisy (lots of Chinese children grabbing at the food) so make sure you arrive early or nothing will be left. - The snorkeling and diving. With the clarity of the water and abundance of sea life I was expecting world class diving and snorkeling but was really disappointed. Firstly after the expensive that you pay to stay here not ever the eye mask is included. Secondly the corals are damaged from people standing on them and the staff did not inform us well on where best to snorkel. Didn't see much on the dive apart from fish and corals. - The main reason for the 1 star is the baby turtle release and egg laying. We were lucky enough whilst there to be able to see baby turtles being released and a mother turtle laying eggs. The staff told us to be quiet and not go into the water during this time, however when tourists followed the baby turtles into the water (almost standing on them), the staff did not say anything and shrugged when I expressed my concern. You can not call yourselves conservation when you are doing more harm than good! The positives: - The entire place is very clean and tidy, with friendly staff. The dive staff in particular was very friendly and the equipment was in good order. - Beautiful sunsets, lovely stars, stunning water. - Almost certain that you will see sea turtles.
