- David MHertford, United Kingdom9 contributionsMust visit place when in BorneoWe did a 3-day 2-night trip, staying in garden bungalow park accomodation and visiting the 4 'show caves': Lang, Deer, Clearwater and Wind. The caves themselves are awesome, especially Deer with its huge scale and Clearwater, with its miles of underground river. Large parts are easily accessible, with a guide, via well maintained walkways. The caves are set in primary rainforest; just walking to and from them and around the area in the evening, surrounded by the sounds of the forest, is a great experience in itself. We booked through Borneo Adventure and had a great guide, Nelson, who was full of interesting information on the caves and the flora and fauna of the forest. Food at the park cafe was good and reasonably priced. There is also a centre with loads of interesting information on the history biology and geology of the park. Mulu is an amazing place, my favourite experience in over 2 weeks travelling in Sarawak and Sabah, and it's a world heritage site with good reason.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 September 2023
- Angie CMalaysia86 contributionsFascinating to experience yourselfI never understood why anyone would find cave tours boring. Pictures really don't do them justice - you need to experience them yourselves. I always thought I'd be disinterested, but this is the third time I'm visiting any kind of caves and I still find them so fascinating. Mulu Caves are even better with their sheer size, I cannot be more amazed! From the bat exodus of the Deer Cave to the underground river in the Clearwater Cave, I really have nothing bad to say about them. Book the tours with the park itself, it's cheaper and the guides are super friendly!Visited April 2022Written 13 June 2022
- Lindie4e8 contributionsA must for all nature loversI visited Mulu national park and its caves in December 2018 for 2 days. It is such a gem of a place and a must for anybody travelling to Borneo ! I booked a trip to see the wildlife in the north and wanted to squeeze in a quick visit to the caves, what was supposed to be an extra to my main adventure turned out to be the best part of my holiday. The park is beautifully run and the guides are knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Add it to your itinerary trust me on this!Visited February 2019Travelled soloWritten 5 January 2020

The caves are part of the Mulu National Park, one of the world heritage area.
Visitors can use longboat to access this rainforest and then climb the valley, across waterfall or even walk around limestone cliffs.

As a Malaysian, i have learned about the size of the caves from the school text books but i couldn't imagine how magnificently large and beautiful it is. Words and photos are insufficient to describe the size and beauty of these caves.
There's a total of 4 show caves separated into 2 places:
Deer and Lang caves are side-by-side: 3km walk from the park HQ - it is also the place to watch the 'bat exodus'
Wind and Clear Water caves: requires a boat ride to reach; there are many stairs in these 2 caves but it's definitely worth the effort.
- to visit: please prepare a torch light, poncho (just in case it rains), hiking shoes with good grip (could be slippery); and always, listen to the guide - they are there to make sure of our safety and comfort.
on the side note: I believe this is the most well-maintained national park in Sarawak - clean and tidy.

The show caves here are majestic and beautiful. Visiting any caves here required a park guide and a fees. The park guides are all very friendly and knowledgeable. The fees to the showcaves inclusive of park guide and some with long boat rides cost only from RM35 to RM85.

Stayed for 4 nights in Mulu and had signed up for the Mulu Racer Cave Adventure, Clearwater Cave, Cave of the Wind, Lang Cave and Deer Cave. Our guide was Mr Undi. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. We loved him :)
Day 1:
Walking trek to Paku Waterfall [about 1-2hrs]. The trek was simple - walking on wooden boardwalk. Bring swimming attire if you are keen to swim at the fall.
Day 2:
Trip to the Racer Cave started at 1400hrs. We were issued with safety gears like harness & helmet with torch. You must be reasonably fit as the trip involved climbing - good to have upper body strength. We were ferried to the cave by long boats [about 15 mins]. Tips: Bring a Go-Pro, gloves, long pants, plain water, simple snacks and suitable shoes [anti-slip]. You will get dirty. We were back at the Park Office by 1730hrs.
Day 3:
Trip to Clearwater & Cave of the Wind. Trip started at 0845 and ended around 1230. 15 mins long boat journey to the caves. Hundreds of stairs but it was worth it.
Walking trip to the Deer and Lang Caves started at 1400hrs. Leisure walk on wooden boardwalks. The caves were massive and awesome. Trip ended around 1700hrs to watch the bat exodus at the nearby Bat Observatory.
Tips: bring torchlight, water and snacks.

Is it possible to go by bus from Mulu to Bandar Seri Begawan?
I heard that there is a bus from Mulu to Miri, then BSB. Or from Mulu to Limbang, then BSB.
But I cannot find the bus route with timetable and price on Google.
Did we need a guide throughout the tour in the mulu cave?

You are not allowed to go inside the caves unless you are with a guide. The tours are operated by the park and there is a daily schedule.
Hi,
In June I will be in Mulu. I would like to ask if it is possible to do two trips: Deer & Lang Caves and Clearwater Cave & Cave Of The Winds during one day?
Best,

It looks like it is possible, as long as you arrange the time accordingly.
Clearwater Cave & Cave of the Winds should be done by 12noon. Then you might have a break for an hour before Deer & Lang Caves at 2pm.

What to wear and now to prepare to go to Mulu caves? Are kids age 5 and 8 ok to go ? Will it be scary?

normal trekking cloth but good to have sandles as u might keep leg in water while river cruise by motor boat. It is safe for kids, my kids were of 3 & 7 when we visited 1st time in 2006. Now much more improved facilities. Not at all scarry, you all might bring home bag full of sweet memories to share. You can check on net on packages available by age group.

How long from miri town?

Hi, around 30mins flight from Miri by ATR is the best option. By river boat is too long but can try if you enough time & group.

I do get claustrophobic in very tight, airless places. I have been in open caves with no problem. How close a space would you say you found in the caves? Thanks for anything you can advise.

hello.. can anyone recommend the most impressive cave(s) to see in the area? i ve read the best one requires advanced caving experience (don t have that). we don t mind a trek but certainly don t have special caving skills. I m looking for something large, beautiful and spectacular! also what would be the best way to get there from tip of borneo area? thanks so much!

all the caves are spectacular, its a package, you register at the national park n the guide will take you to visit the caves. no experiance needed.the only one that require strenght n extreme climbing is going to the Pinnacles n you can opt out of this. from tip of borneo( sabah) - you have to go back to Kota Kinabalu n take a flight ( via MAS Wings) to MIRI .MULU is in Sarawak.

I am planning a three-day visit with my family to Mulu NP. Is it reasonable/possible to do "Clearwater Cave & Cave of the Winds" tour and "Deer and Lang Caves" tour on the same day? Would it be managable with a 12-year old kid?

Hi,
You enter the garden of Eden via the Deer Cave and it's a full day. You'd get to see the bat exodus at the end as well so that complex can be done in one go. Clearwater and Cave of the Winds is a half day. There are about 200 steps up to one of them so the swim in the river at the end is most welcome. Do as much as you can there, as we found this was the best part of our tour of Malaysia. Stay in the park accommodation as the reception is where the tours go from.
