- Chew Eng OngSingapore, Singapore820 contributionsCanada Hill, with a historic past.Canada Hill, Miri, Sarawak As you come into Miri from the airport you will see a hill on your right. It is not very high but it offers a panoramic view of the town and the sea. You are able to walk to the summit from you hotel in town, other than that you have to go there by taxi or hired car. There are ample car parks on the top. In the middle of the day there are hardly any visitors, but after dawn and in the evening locals come here for the sunrise or sunset and for walks, and running is very popular here. The sunrises and sunsets are stunning from both side of the plateau. Canada Hill I was told, was the place when Canadians used to reside and a Canadian would provide a service for the employment of workers for the oil fields. Therefore there must be an oil field in the hills, before. On top of the plateau the Petroleum Museum stood and a replica of the first oil well in the whole of Malaysia and was erected on the very spot (near the Museum). It was rightfully named the Grand Old Lady and it can be seen from the town of Miri. Grand Old Lady was completed in December 1910, for a depth of 452 feet (137.77 m). The last production depth was 1096 feet (334.36 m), when the well was abandoned on 31st October 1972. The estimated total production was 660,000 barrels.Visited June 2019Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 July 2019

This comment is strictly for the hiking trail and not for the Petroleum Museum at the Canada Hill. If you need a place for a short hike in Miri, or a place for daily hikes to maintain fitness level, then look no further. Access is free, and is located near the center of town (ridesharing costs about RM5). Previously only the back side of the hill is frequented by hikers. Now the front side (facing Miri City where the big signboard is located) attracts more hikers on daily basis. I had hiked the back side trail countless times, and I enjoy the front side even more. Better experience than Lambir National Park (except on Lambir's bigger and taller trees). Many stalls (at parking area) for you to hydrate after the hike. Give it a try!

Not terribly impressed. The museum was closed - for renovations but it didn't look as though it would be re-opening anytime soon.
I had a hire car so I drove up there. If I'd walked or paid for a taxi then I wouldn't be too happy.
Views were OK but nothing to shout about or even take photos of.
My visit didn't last long.
Bit of a waste of time to be honest.

A great view of Miri city. Would recommend 3 visits - Morning sunrise, midday for clear view, night for City lights.

The exhibits are old, dusty, mouldy, fading in colours. Only thing good is the scenery from the hill top overlooking the town and sea

If you have done time to kill either coming from or going to the airport this may be worth a slight detour.
The Petroleum Museum has a fairly interesting short section about the discovery and development of oil by Shell in the early 1900s. However, most of the technical interactive displays don’t work.
The hill with a view of Miri is very plain...Yiu can easily skip this attraction.

Canada Hill is a great place to take photos of Miri and drop into the visitor centre to understand the history of Miri. Well worth the taxi ride.
