The beach was very clean and we walked by the shores around 530pm. Many people stayed on to catch the Blue Tears phenomenon that's caused by special algae. However its more prominent during hot weather and it was rainy when we went.

Tusan Beach, also known as "The Blue Tears" Beach, whereby one can see the neon blue illuminating the sea water at night. Too bad, i was not able to stay until the night. We drove to Tusan from the airport which takes about less than 20min. We arrived at 5.15pm where it's not time for sunset yet. So we scrolled around for many nice photos while enjoying the uniqueness of the cliff. Mare sure you see this piece of art from different angles! From the parking, it takes around 15min walk to reach the cliff. There are some food stalls selling food and drinks by the locals. Public toilet is available at 20 cents. No public transport, no Grab either. People go there by own transport.

If you're the type of person who loves sunset, remember to drop by here if you're in Miri. I was there end Sept. The view is amazing. Came here on a weekday. So I don't see much crowd. Went for dinner at a seafood restaurant some distance away and after dinner came back here hoping to see the blue tears. I was lucky enough to see them. Walked down the cliff barefooted for a better grip with touch light in my hand. Was not able to see any blue tears initially until I stepped into the waves. Apparently the plankton will only "glow" when it's being agitated. So be careful when you walk down the cliff. Remember to bring touch light. Good luck!

Tusan Cliff is a must-visit place if you were in Miri. It is 40-mins drive away from Miri city. It is located on the way back from Niah Cave after Bekenu. It is recommended to drop by this place in the evening after visiting to Niah Cave. You will have stunning view with beautiful sunset. The Tusan cliff has a splendid natural view with fine sand, rocks and stunning view. You must try the coconut ice-cream at the food stall and it is the best coconut ice-cream i ever tried. The only sad case is that there is lack of rubbish bins and many rubbish scattered around the area. If you were happened to be there, it is recommended to carry a plastic bag with you and help in cleaning the beach while walking along the beach. The beach side is more than 5km long and it is cool to walk while seeing the sunset. This is the best beach i ever visited in Miri.

This place is excellent for photography. It has unique cliff features that is not found anywhere nearby, even among surrounding countries. I was there to photograph the sunrise and sunset. The only danger, if it is as for some it is not a danger, is that one has to be careful of the rising tide. For a beach, it is nothing to shout about as the under currents are strong and a lot of sand is churned up with the waves. As a result the water is murky.

We did a day trip out to the Tusan Cliff Beach. Nice drive out into the country side. Infrastructure in very poor condition and almost unsafe for tourist to use. Like almost every where in the world now, you can see the impact from humans with litter all over the beach.
I f you have the time and don't mind driving out of Miri for 40 minutes then see a dirty beach with some big cliffs then its worthwhile...

Best place to watch sunsets from in Miri. Just make sure you have plenty of insect repellent on. Check the tide before you leave Miri town, it's best to go at low tide when you can walk out to the 'horse'.

Absolutely did not expect to find this beautiful beache that stretches out for miles and miles. The cliff formations are really nice and we fully enjoyed the long walk on the beach.
We had food at the stalls by the parking as a reward for the hike. Lots of yummy sate options.

Tusan Beach is 27 kilometres from Miri and the drive along the coastal highway takes about 1/2 hour.
There is a signboard at the turn off to the left coming from Miri. Make sure you set your indicators early as there is no turning lane and the oncoming cars coming from behind need to make a full stop.
From the main road it is another 3km drive on a tarred road. There are some makeshift car parking spaces at the end of the road with a row of open air food stalls and a public toilet.
We visited twice in the late afternoon and only one food stall closest to the cliff was open, selling fresh coconut juice and water.
By the time we came back from the beach at around 6.45pm all stalls were closed on the area was quite dark.
There was a recent land slide at the cliff and the way down to the beach is quite haphazard with some simple steps carved out of the sand and clay. The bamboo hand rail had almost collapsed. On a rainy day it would be very slippery.
The walk along the beach to the horse head shaped rock overhang takes about 15 minutes. Depending on the tide and clouds one can take nice sunset photos. Watch out for the tide cutting off the stretch of beach closest to the rock formation.
Tusan has been touted as one of the major tourist attractions in Miri but a walk along the beach and sunsets can be had closer to Miri at the esplanade and a few Kilometers up the road from Tusan is Bungai Beach which is much better developed with a home stay hostel, proper and clean toilets and a nice little market and food stalls.
As for Tusan, once a safe walkway down to the beach, proper lighting and dependable eating places and clean toilets are set up it could become an addition to the tourist places in Miri.

Hi I'm planning to go Tusan beach in mid May 2019. My main purpose is to see blue tears. Is there any season for blue tears? Can we see it in May? I read some say in Nov & Dec. Some say wee morning hours. Kindly advise. Thx.

Hi Li Jin L
The best chance to see the blue tears is apparently in nov-dec. But even then, it is more of luck.
Good luck!

Can we visit and stroll around Tusan beach without tour guide? And is there any available transport back to miri town at night?
Written 16 December 2018
You can visit and stroll around Tusan beach without a tour guide. It is easy. Get a grab, or a privately arranged driver for a return trip. There is no public transport in this area.

I am planning to go in late August with my family. My family includes an elderly woman and two babies. How is the access pathway to the beach for the less mobile? Also is the sandfly situation bad? With these concerns in mind, should I still go with my family? Thanks for your reply in advance.
Written 13 July 2018
Not advisable to go with seniors / babies who are less mobile.
There is no proper "concrete staircase" , just a dirt track and mud steps down to the beach area closer to the waves .
The "railings" is just ropes/bamboo poles for some support , but in my opinion still pretty treacherous
Unless you just wanted to see the sunset , then it's ok to leave the less mobile members near the carpark area while the fitter ones can go down and walk closer to the waves and also to see the cliff.
There are some sandflies but not super bad probably because we went to the beach after it rained .
However there are plenty of mosquitoes at the toilet area .
