This museum has a diorama of the site which gives an excellent overview and explanation of Sigiriya's cultural importance. It was originally a Buddhist monastery and established as a fortress. It was important for the trade routes with the Gulf, China, India and the Roman Empire. No photos are permitted here.

Sigiriya Museum is one of the most informative museums in Srl Lanka. I really enjoyed visiting this place. It is also well organized. Each chamber is specified with different categories and there are plenty of things one can learn from this place. I recommend this place especially for school children.

Don't miss the museum's animated recreation of the palace/fort on top of the mountain! The old photos of the British discovery of this site are also fascinating.

This museum donated by the Japanese is not often visited, it's well laid out and informative. Architecturally I think it's quite interesting too with the water running below and trees growing through it.

My wife and I visited the Sigiriya Rock during our recent 3 week holiday to Sri Lanka. Prior to climbing the staircases to the top, we visited the Museum. Considering this is a UNESCO World Heritage attraction, in our view the museum was a disappointment. The displays were average at best and didn't really excite us or capture the amazing... More

It is best to visit the rock as early as possible. It opens at 7am, and if you start the climb then, you climb in the shade and with fewer people. Visit the museum afterwards. Tip: if you have a driver, ask them to guide you. It will keep the local guides at bay. Also do your research in advance... More

Visiting the museum is worthy, but the exhibition may be better arranged. New colour on the walls might look the museum quite better. No really competiveness to European historical museums.
