It's called mini Sigiriya due to the similarity of rock structure. But like Dambulla, it is a Buddhist temple containing 7 painted caves. Initially we thought it might be just like Dambulla, but after visiting both, we found that frescoes are different in nature. Specially in Mulgirigala, Dutch influence is very easy to notice. Travellers interested in ancient paintings are... More

What a fascinating place! Go early to avoid the heat of the day when climbing all those steps. Our guide was wonderfully informative and great with the children. We were blessed by a monk at the top and were asked to ring the temple bell. The girls were entranced. The view from the top was magnificent. Well worth the visit... More

Really nice temple with 400-500 steps to the top. Our tuk tuk driver, Manoj, has explained to us all the important about meaning of each caves, which was very nice. You can relax on the top, just follow little path behind the temple. Nice morning trip from Goyamboka for 1800 LKR.

This was amazing! Fantastic way to spend a few hours! You don't need a guide, it's easy to read about the history in advance and then find your way up the paths and steps amongst the cave temples. Make sure you have some change to buy lotus flowers as offerings to Buddha on the way up. I was dressed covering... More

We spent an afternoon with Sampath as our guide and he was amazing. We have three very young children and he helped get them to the top in a safe way. He was extremely knowledgeable and fun. We would recommend him to anyone.

Climb to the top of the mountain, when you go around the side, and there's a beautiful view of the sunset.

Be prepared to hike 500+ steps while exploring the 7 caves! As this was a last minute, end of the trip excursion, we departed late morning, but in hind sight we probably would have fared better heat/humidity wise had we gotten an earlier start. Nevertheless, we survived and fortunately were well-stocked with water to replenish what we were sweating away.... More

Definitely worth a visit esp if you miss Sigiriya and Dambulla - it's a mini version of both rolled into one. OK not as impressive but still very interesting, quieter and not as expensive. Scramble behind the stupa at the top for great views.
