- Dennis PMelbourne, Australia2,107 contributionsSIMPLY STUNNING DESIGN AND A VERY TRANQUIL SPOTContaining the tomb of Mughal emperor Humayan, this magnificent building was built in 1570, after his death, and ordered by his queen. It was designed by a Persian architect and was the first garden tomb on the Indian subcontinent. The beautiful building was the prototype for the taj mahal . Seeoing this fabulous building one can see how its construction Again, the garden grounds are spacious and quiet Excellent building and well worth the visitVisited February 2023Written 22 March 2023

Went back on my most recent trip this year and remembered how amazing it is. Personally I prefer it to the Taj Mahal.Visited March 2023Travelled on businessWritten 29 April 2023
- Crickette4 contributionsPerfect visit with the right tour guideSimply incredible! We hired Rakesh Sharma, a tour guide at the gate who had retired from the Archaeological Survey of India. He was very knowledgeable and communicated well in excellent English. I wish we had found him earlier as he could have shown us everything we wanted to see in and around DelhiVisited November 2022Travelled with familyWritten 26 June 2023
- dashiel09London, United Kingdom2 contributionsA beautiful surprise in Delhi - the blueprint for the TajA really excellent and unexpected delight in Delhi - clear to see how this was a blueprint for the Taj Mahal and in many ways this is a preferable visit to its vastly more famous ancestor along the river. We arrived at about 4pm and it was quite quiet, the gardens were tranquil and well maintained and the buildings incredible. Highly recommend a guide to unlock the deeper meanings of the fusion of Islamic / Buddhist and Christian iconography around the tomb itself. We had a wonderful gentleman with a red beard called Ishrat who really made a huge difference.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 September 2023
- AndythebaggieBirmingham, United Kingdom2,328 contributionsMuch more than a Taj Mahal predecessor!Humayun’s tomb was a pleasant surprise on our sight seeing in Delhi. It was thronged with hundreds of enthusiastic and smart schoolchildren, who much to our surprise loved chatting to us and taking selfies! This is a large site accessed through extensive well kept gardens. There are plenty of subsidiary buildings in the park to explore if you have time. The main buildings upper levels are accessed via steep and large steps, from the top there are fine views. The tomb is mostly red sandstone though there is plenty of marble, and intriguingly a couple of Stars of David above the main entrance. Inside it’s cool with plenty of marble work including screens and the tombs themselves which are in several rooms. Well worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2023
- BOJOThomasBridgend, United Kingdom64 contributionsSimply stunningI don’t think anyone can prepare you for what you will see when visiting Humayun’s Tomb. The whole place is truly magnificent. As others have said ticket prices vary for foreigners and Indians. Buying tickets online can allow fast entry but if you go early in the morning there won’t be any queues. Once you enter you can be there from sunrise to sunset. There are other tombs in the same complex and all worth seeing. We went just after sunrise on a weekday. We took an Uber and it was very convenient. The place was deserted. Lots and lots of birds. Peacocks roam around freely. Woodpeckers peck the palm trees. Kingfishers sit on the edge of the shallow pools being renovated. It is clear extensive renovation is being done and ground work being laid for what is to come. We did not hire a guide. I think it’s best to read up online and then read the placards in front of each building - you are likely to learn more about the place this way. The place has sooooo much history. Sunder nursery which is a garden is also next door to but entry fees apply. We had a wonderful day out.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- JohnRegoParkRego Park, New York1,134 contributionsA grand tomb that prefigures the TajThis massive tomb is set in a lovely series of gardens. It rises majestically on a plateau and dominates everything around it. The interior is mostly empty although you can see the grave itself, and smaller grants in other rooms. There is a charge to enter, and a parking lot is nearby. The lot fills up quickly and isn't big. I suggest an early entry and exit.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 November 2023
- rashmi rNew Delhi, India104 contributionsA beautiful monumentI was lucky to visit the tomb with a Anoushka Jain, the founder of reseach and heritage organization ENROUTE INDIAN HISTORY . I was amazed at her knowledge of indian history as she took us around explaining every detail right from the stones and the symbols used on the walls to the empereors and their family members that laid buried there. She answered all the questions on how the surrounding place evolved over the years to what grew in the gardens. It was truly a wonderful experience . Will be going to more heritage walks with her groups.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 November 2023

A must visit in Delhi! A heritage monument very well preserved and protected. Rest rooms are neat & clean as we need to walk and spend at least an hour plus to see this imposing tomb built for King Humayun by his wife I was told.

This huge red sandstone structure, located at the centre of a large garden compkex , houses the temains of 2nd Mughal Emperor Humayun. The tomb was made under the order of the Chief Empress Bega Begum and designed by Persian architecht, Mirza Giyaas. The construction compketed in 1572 CE. This is declared as UNESCO World Heritage in 1993. Apart from this structure, the garden complex also houses graves of Bega Begum, Dara Shikouh, Farukhshiyar and alao of Isa Khan Niazi, an Afghan noble of Sher Shah's court.
We visited this huge garden complex in February 2024. It's a long nice walk through the green garden complex. The first structure on the left was the tomb of Isa Khan. A brick and yellow sandstone built hexagonal structure with blue ornate and other stone on the wall with a large central tomb surrounded by number of smaller blue tombs. The inner chamber has nice Jaffrey designed walls and houses the grave of the noble and his family.
The tomb of Bega Begum is comparatively simpler one.
The main attraction is the massive tomb of Humayun. Built on a eight metre high and 12000 square meter spread terrace, the 47 metre high tomb is built of rubble , white and red sandstone and with white marble flooring. One warning for senior citizen and for the visitors with knee problem. The staircase approach to the terrace is very steep and each stair step very high. It will be quite a challenge. One suggestion. Use the right entrance where stairs are slightly less steep. Once you climb, a great view of the complex unfurl. The ceiling at the entrance has a nice flowery design. The main chamber is well decorated with jali, white marble, red sandstone. At the centre, the tomb situated on a square designed citadel. The sheer size and ivory and red coloured interior looks stunning.
A must see to get a taste of Mughal Grandeur.

Fascinating & soul stirring monument. Made more special by our ASl guide Rakesh ( Mob : +91 9873171682) who educated us about the finer nuances of Mughal architecture, the engravings of the Koran & the lotus denoting a tomb of a beloved beside. The red sand stone mamoth tomb which was the inspiration of the Taj Mahal in structure minus the minarets & the marble of course. Rakesh made the trip more than worth it's while.

One of the best monument in Jaipur. We went early was almost empty. Our tour guide used it as the foundation to explain the whole history.

I had no idea what this monument was all about before we visited, but I'm so glad we went. I feel like I learned quite a bit about the history of the area, the architecture, and the significance of this type of tomb/monument. It was also a good stop to make before seeing the Taj Mahal, since there are so many similarities.

better preserved then to Safdarjung, good for a quick visit. There might not be water in the "canals" when you visit. Gardens are not really well maintained though.

A remarkable Mughal archaeological wonder in Delhi, the Humayun's Tomb is an expansive site that requires ample time for exploration. It is advisable to bring a water bottle along, as the area is vast, and you may find yourself engaged in considerable walking. Convenient parking facilities are available, and ride-sharing services like Ola and Uber can drop you off right at the gate.
Entrance to this historical marvel comes at a modest fee of Rs. 40 for Indian visitors. The site is a photographer's delight, offering numerous picturesque angles. Upon entering, consider veering either to the right or left side of the well-maintained lawn to capture the tomb from a unique perspective. This method allows for a comprehensive view of the entire tomb, rather than a standard shot from the center.
Inside the tomb lie the resting places of Emperor Humayun and his wife. The solemnity of this sacred space adds a profound historical depth to your visit. Additionally, the complex houses smaller yet exquisitely crafted tombs that are worth exploring, contributing to the overall charm of the site. Ensure you allocate sufficient time to appreciate the intricate details and historical significance embedded within this Mughal masterpiece.

Nominal Ticketed entry for this well kept monument. Do read up on history and architecture before you head out or get guide to help explain. They open at 7am so if it’s summer time, head out right when they open to beat the rush and heat. No food allowed inside. Fantastic picture opportunities at so many locations. The architecture is still preserved well. You will get to see parrots as well. Takes around 2-3 hours to cover everything at leisure and take pictures.

Nearest Metro Station to Humayun's Tomb is Jor Bagh metro station on the yellow line. From here, you can take a taxi or an auto. The JLN Stadium on the violet line is also one of the closest metro station to Humayun's Tomb. if you can be specific from which part you are trying to come, it will be easier to advice.

It is very safe and well visited place so you will see many people around. Transportation to and fro can be an issue so better take your own car or leave from there in day light.

If you buy tickets online do you need to print out before you arrive? Or do you just show your phone confirmation?
Abhitheexplorer
New Delhi, India114 contributions
You do not need to take print out, you can just show it over the phone. Interestingly, it is better to buy online otherwise you will have to stand in a long queue to buy physical ticket. We faced the same situation and bought tickets then and there on phone app to avoid line.

By all means there are no restrictions. As long as you are not making the premises dirty and make noise, you are allowed to do what you wish.
