A private collection with a wide range of items put togetther in a formidable palace-like building. The green area around the building is also worth the trip.

It’s a very strange art gallery / expensive hobby collection. There is really no theme or coherence in the place. They were considered by trip advisor the best museum in latin america 6 years ago. Very strange, in Mexico City, Bogotá or even São Paulo you will find better and proper ones.

If you’re european, especially from a big city, is just not worth it.

There was a dutch themed galeria that was consistent, however wrongly trying to re-write history, and surgically removing portugal from the narrative, eventhough they have several paintings from colonial brasil under Portugal, none of which identified.

Then a medieval collection, extensive, for sure not cheap, some spanish coat of arms, and english noble houses. Then a clock collection.. and the swords of an egypt king (!).

The “piece of resistance”, the chappel… built 10 years ago in gothic style from the outside, with spanish barroque on the inside.

The founder was at some moment, the 2nd richer brazilian. I guess he has expensive hobbies, and wanted to show it.

Note: the staff was lovely, helpful, doing their job.

This private collection is quite amazing and does not appear to follow any particular theme. There is weaponry, art, china etc. This may be off-putting to some but we loved it. And for any item that is collected there will be a squillion examples of it. We especially loved the Botero sculpture.

This is a fabulous museum, set in an extraordinary place. The exhibits are varied and fascinating. They range from rare early seventeenth century books to art and sculpture of many descriptions. There are many memorable exhibits.

Look out for the monkeys too. They play in the lovely grounds and it’s worth a visit for them alone.

Do be aware of the opening times, though. It’s currently closed on Mondays and only open in the afternoons (1.30 - 4.30) on other days.

If you’re in Recife, don’t miss it.

Amazing place in the middle of the city, we didn't expect such a beautiful and unique place in Recife. We were happy to enjoy the two hour journey

A few nice pieces, but mostly a collection of an extremely wealthy man with a poor eye for art. I honestly left wondering if he was a sociopath. If you're from a city with decent art museums, this is not worth visiting.

State of the art place to visit. Rich in concept of a museum and good curation. Amazing restaurant at the Institute and large greener spot to relax and snap pictures.
