Although you should not bathe here, bexause of the constant shark attacks, the area is great for a stroll on the sand, a break for a coconut water, or even exercising on the sports area.

We loved the beach. It is a great view, with warm water. The only thing is you have to be aware of sharks and jelly fish.
Not safe to swim.

But to stay in the shallow water is safe and great

Boa Viagem beach in Recife is a must-visit, for the glamor and the view of the waterfront of the Avenue with its beautiful buildings. It is not by far one of the best beaches on the Pernambuco coast. It is interesting to visit for this reason. Attention to regulars, observe the signs signaling the presence of sharks. Your outing can end up in a hospital, sometimes even with fatal incidents. Good for a walk along the sidewalk early in the morning or late in the day.

Let me start by reminding visitors that access to the beach is not allowed on weekends due to the pandemic!
This very long promenade is quite safe and pleasant to walk along day or night, obviously with extra care in later hour.
Kiosks offering drinks and bites, public toilets and training/sports equipment can be found along the many kilometres, all marked on the pavement for jogging references.
The bike lane is unfortunately never respected and one should watch for two-wheeled pickpockets.
Free wifi doesn't work as promoted.

Boa Viagem Beach is the most famous in Recife and has a great structure for tourists. The place is quite busy; when the weather is favorable, it is common to see bathers and people exercising.

This beach has warm, greenish waters, providing not only a good dip in the sea but also an excellent background for the eyes. The strip of sand is 7 kilometers (about 4 miles) lined with coconut trees. On the sidewalk there are kiosks that sell drinks & snacks and on the sands, street vendors.
Boa Viagem has relatively weak waves because the shore is protected by a large coral reef. At low tide, several natural pools are formed, especially around the Grand Mercure hotel.
There are several signs on the beach warning of the risk of shark attack. In Recife there are bull shark attacks, so it is important to take some precautions, such as avoiding diving at high tide, or just not going into the water (between June 1992 and September 2006 there were 47 shark attacks resulting in 17 deaths. According to the Shark Attack File, the most recent attacks in Recife occurred in 2011).

Being the most famous beach in Recife and in the area where most hotels are, this is the place to be when here!
The very present signage about sharks and tides is no joke, it's there for a reason, so DO NOT cross the reefs by any reason whatsoever, nor go for a swim in high tide!
Due to the skyscrapers, the beach gets shaded around 3pm in most parts, which doesn't prevent one from still enjoying it, bearing the tide in mind.
During this covid times, it is mandatory to keep the mask on while on the beach, though nobody does it! Vendors must have it on anyway and there is control.
Speaking of them, use your judgement to decide what to consume from them in terms of food for the sake of your intestines!
The use of beach chairs and parasol at no cost is conditioned to ordering something, or else it costs 5-10 reais per person.
Along the promenade there are public toilets but don't expect them to be impeccably clean; ask the caretaker for toilet paper if needed.
Any time day or night don't show off belongings like jewellery or smartphones, nor do you take valuables in a wallet for a walk, there are many pickpockets around.
Other than that, enjoy the place to be in Recife!!

Though the beach looks scenic, and the blues and greens of the water are candy to the eye, there really is not much too the place. Nice sidewalks close to the beach, the one across the street you can’t walk 5 yards without tripping because of the unevenness. The sand is nice, and there are plenty of vendors offering an umbrella and seat. Free outdoor fitness area and a bike lane, with nice vegetation along the strip. But not many restaurants or proper places to eat along the beach area. Though the beach is cleaned, the water, well, you are just a mile or two from the old industrial portion of Recife, and the drainage waterways pour into the ocean less than a mile away. So nice beach to relax, but not swim in, and the entire area just seems old in spite of hotels and apartments with wannabe modern facelifts.
