We are soaking up Civil War history as we tour the Gulf Shores area. This fort is another worth visiting. You must take the ferry over to Dauphin Island but both are experiences worth doing. We also visited the estuary while in the Island. Recommend all!

After the non denominational sunrise service my husband and I toured the fort. We've been coming to the island for years and this was the first time at the fort. It is well preserved and maintained beautifully. Being history buffs we thoroughly enjoyed it. Don't miss it!

WE spent a day on Dauphin Island, and one stop was to Fort Gaines. We love the blacksmith shop that they have and got to watch some of the stuff first hand. We meet a young guy from our home town of Oxford MS working there, working his way through school. This is a must see if you love history

Very cool area to check out while you are on the island. Definitely a lot of history in this area and a great opportunity to look around and view the architecture and some interesting pieces and relics of the Civil War.

What a great way to get a history lesson into our Spring Break! And everyone working here was so nice and willing to take time to show us things!

I can't say that my opinion is not clouded by Fort Morgan which I visited just before this, however it paled in comparison. First, these Forts are only separated by a Ferry and yet one lets you in for free as a veteran and the other doesn't. Second, while I appreciate the effort and enthusiasm of the reinactors, it's just... More

Great place to visit for the history buff. There is not a lot of activities on the island so this is a don't miss. $16 per person fee seemed a little high for what doesn't take very long but glad we went.

Ft. Gaines is a great place for everyone in the family. Its beautiful and educational. Sitting on Mobile Bay, the views are magnificent. Children love it and adults love it. The history plaques along the route are mesmerizing. There's also a museum, clean restrooms, and a nice gift shop featuring a drink machine. Ft. Gaines is a must see on... More

To be completely fair, we arrived at 20 minutes to closing. Our bad. But note that we'd already enjoyed a great trip and a great day. We don't hold against someone who needs to say: "Sorry, we're closed," or "sorry, that will be a 45 minutes wait." We're also the kind of folks who might be willing to pay $8.00... More
