I found this little shop years ago but it's moved since - to 105, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Taman Kota Laksamana, 75200 Melaka. Lovely, unique handcrafted artistic items lovingly curated by someone with a great eye for quality! Best place for souvenirs you will actually wear/use/display.

Found this lovely shop/prints studio on a quieter street parallel to Jonker. They sell handmade prints from wood cut blocks made by the artist proprietor, Kooi Hin, mostly based on Chinese themes as historically many Chinese lived and continue to live in Malacca. There are lots of other items available like handmade bookmarks, small wood carved souvenir items etc. My partner bought a set of cool vintage scooters fridge magnets designed by Kooi Hin which you won't find elsewhere. It is such a delightful shop compared to the tourist tat on Jonker and well worth the detour. Kooi Hin cheerfully arranged for my larger purchases to be shipped for an additional charge which was very helpful. His prints are often designed to fit Ikea frames e.g. Rabba too. Really pleased that we found this shop.

Hueman Studio is located on a side street adjacent to Jonker St, so it is pretty easy to find. The artist specializes in modern twists of wood block prints. The prices are very reasonable. We found many prints to bring home with us. The artist spent time talking with us about his craft. He is great!

Sorry, this is a post about a trip to Melaka in 2006, not as listed. I was curious to see if this store was still open and was pleased that it still is. When I was there, I found this amazing shop, Hueman Studio. I loved that it was a true artist selling his work rather than some tourist crap. Even the trinkets were unique and original. I bought a set of the Five Elements wood block prints and are still getting comments on it. Explore around his shop and look at the design elements. When I was there, he used tin cans in the most fun way. You can tell that he truly is passionate about being creative. Well worth the detour off the main tourist blocks.

Hard to spot but worth the look. No big sign but on main thoroughfare - 9 Jalan Tokong. He's a printer. Lovely prints and souvenirs for sale at reasonable prices. Nice batik gifts. Quirky interior. Very friendly reception.

We visited Melaka last year for the first time and bought some beautiful prints here. They are now framed and look amazing in our house so returning to Melaka for Christmas 2014 we had to buy some more, for ourselves and friends. The colours of the block prints are vibrant and contemporary, the designs attractive and somehow soothing. The gallery also sells lovely batik gifts and other small souvenirs. It's good to find a gallery where you can buy something so much better than the hundreds of other shops in Melaka that all sell the same tourist tat.

We were just wandering around Melaka and discovered this little shop/studio close tot he Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. We just loved it and the young man running the shop was so helpful and not pushy at all. He has an attached studio where he makes artwork and wooden scuplted pieces. We loved it in here and ended up buying tons of things. A really nice change from all the other pushy sellers that all sell the same stuff shop after shop.

This store has hand crafted artwork from prints to wood carvings. The local artist is soft-spoken and the opposite from pushy street vendors. That said, the prices are higher and are set (no haggling) but much more appealing than art we saw during our trip.

I was roaming around Malacca and had to seek refuge from the rain when I stumbled into this shop. Kooi the owner was so pleasant and inviting. I spent some time wandering and was blown away by how talented this man is! Most of the work in the shop is done by him and they are tremendously unique. I got a Chinese astrology piece (GOAT) but wished I had more space in my luggage to buy more. I will definitely go back the next time I am in Malaysia. When I finished shopping he was kind enough to offer me an umbrella to continue exploring the area even though he would be closing in less than an hour. I returned it at the end of the evening when he'd already gone home so I wasnt able to thank him. I highly recommend this place if you want unique, handmade gifts or souvenirs on your next trip.

If you’re looking for good quality, locally produced handicrafts, don’t bother trawling the shops on Jonker Street products – there aren’t any. Instead go to Heuman Studio on Jalan Tokong (which runs parallel to Jonker Street), where you can buy beautiful Chinese-influenced woodcut prints made by the talented and charming artist who runs the studio. As well as his prints, you can buy quality craft items made by indigenous communities. It really is worth a visit as not only will you come away with beautiful gifts, you’ll be supporting talented local artisans.
