Visited pre-covid and took a river cruise and visited the carnival alongside the river. The river is kind of narrow and the cruise provided a pretty experience to take in the sights on both banks of the river.
While the cruise took close to an hour, there's nothing much if you seeking thrills.
Suggest opting for the cruise in the evenings.

The Malacca river is the heart of Malacca. And nothing better to explore it through the river cruise, and then walking on the sidewalks and dining at the many riverside pubs and restaurants. And along with the Jonker Street which forms the tourist hub of Malacca, this area actually creates the pulse of Malacca. It is beautiful specially in the evening. We were 3 families of 9 people and each and every of us enjoyed the experience. We went there for both the nights of our stay. Some of them even went during the day and enjoyed the many museums in and around this area.
THE MALACCA RIVER CRUISE
For the river cruise, if you are driving, you can put on Malacca River Cruise Boarding Point on Google Maps. This will take you to the boarding area which has a huge car park, the ticket counter and then the boarding pier. Parking is easily available. The River Cruise tickets are RM 30 per adult for foreigners and RM 25 for locals. For children it is RM 25 and RM 20 respectively. The boarding process adheres to COVID SOPs very well. They have proper temperature checks, hand sanitizer and a social distanced waiting area. Each of the boats have sanitizers and the mandatory scanning through the tracing app MySejatara.
The river cruise experience is wonderful. It last 45 minutes. The whole boat ride has been planned by the tourism department as it takes you through the river with well lit sidewalks, lovely lit up wall paintings, glimpses of beautiful traditional Malaysian houses. Also the river goes underneath various bridges which are nicely lit up. The whole experience is beautiful as the day becomes cool in the evening (with Malacca very hot during the day). You get to see many lovely restaurants, sidewalks and sitting areas. The boat offers commentary in Malay and English through speakers. Though the volume is a little low to understand fully.
This is a must do activity in Malacca.
THE LOVELY RESTAURANTS, PUBS
There are many eating and drinking options next to the river. Each with different cuisine and décor overlooking the river. They are nicely lit up in the evening. And you can just spend time there next to the river and waving to the river cruise passengers. Few places also have live music. Its beautiful in the evening.
JONKER STREET
Well, it is very disappointing that due to COVID, this has become a dead zone. With the night market only operating on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, it is completely deserted in the evening and night on weekdays. Indeed very sad.

Second visit to Malacca and absolutely love the jonker area adjoining tobthe church. The river and its adjoining are has its beauty to offer both day and night. Night the river is lit up with lights and boats also have ssome colourful lights fitted. You may try to walk on the paved way to reach the mouth of the rivervas well.

A fairly affordable ferry ride down malacca river where you can see mural paintings, old buildings and settlements of Malacca. The river is clean, a great job done by the state government. If you’re lucky, you could see some monitor lizards swimming or basking around

The night cruise is a highlight. Relaxing, pleasant view of the heritage buildings, courteous staff , very affordable. We truly enjoyed the scene of the architecture along the river and the lights. We also had also 30% off on top the normal rates. Good bargain. Good experience

A wise and salute effort to Tun Ali Rustam because his idea to clean the river was turned into a tourist center that must be visited. You need to come take the children to Melaka and take the Melaka River Cruise. Just a few minutes you have explored the History of Melaka because the Melaka River Cruise tour guide will explain about the place and History of the places passed. Relax while getting to know the History of Melaka.

A confusing start, as it seems the ticketing counter and the staff at the entrance operate on a different time table. We were told cruises leave on.the hour, every hour.
We arrived at 6:30 pm and bought the ticket for the 7 pm cruise. However, the staff at the entrance hurried us as we were told the cruise leaves in.5 minutes (6:40 pm). Asked about the 7:00 pm.departure, we were told if you miss this one, next cruise departs at 7:15 pm.
Foreigners be forewarned. This cruise company penalises you for being a foreigner. The charge a lower price for locals, and foreigners pay more. Small difference, but principles and equitable pricing matters to some, like me.
We chose the 7:00 pm.cruise because it is cooler and you get to see the evening lights along the cafes and restaurants that line the river.
The ride is short and pleasant, for forty minutes. But, keep your Covid Mask on because the waters in the river has a bad stench, and you will find rubbish floating on the surface. The Local City Council can learn how to deal with managing water pollution from other major cities like Singapore and Shanghai where they offer river cruises and hence clean the river regularly.

This is not really a river but a canal or glorified stream but the town revolves around this and thus the closer you are located to this place the better it is for you.

Look for the Museum Samudera ... there's a lane on the right just before it ... take the lane and you can park there. You'll see the River Cruise Ticket booth and jetty from where you park

The price I don't remember exactly but it was not a deal breaker. Maybe around 25 Ringets (4 Ringets to 1 US dollar). I used Travelex to exchange dollars to Ringets before leaving USA. It was very helpful as Grab Car took over Uber and most drivers quote in cash with most rides in Malacca being about 4 to 7 Ringets per trip. They do not expect or require tips. Malacca is different than Penang in this way. Hotel employees actually turned down tips.

Please tell me whether these boats can carry large crowds about 200 people ( like the boats in Bangkok). If not approximately how many people can ride in one boat?

Do check out site for more info - /melakarivercruise. The boats are much smaller than those in Bangkok. It carries between 20-40 persons per trip. You could easily split the group in different boats if you are going in a large group and the boats run quite regularly. Recommend to take the ride in evening or night when the weather is cooler
