- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom179,494 contributionsRiver with pretty sights all the wayThis river flows through Melaka and the heritage part of the city. There’s two main ways to see the interesting (read touristy) parts of the river. Either walk along the promenade on both sides of the river, or take the river cruise. I prefer the riverside walk as it lets you see all the murals, lights and landmarks at your own pace. Melaka is pretty hot during the day and I recommend walking along the river near dusk when it's much cooler and more enjoyable.Visited March 2020Written 1 March 2020
- Charles TanPenang Island, Malaysia48 contributionsA pleasant relaxing short cruise, but keep your Covid Mask on throughout the journeyA confusing start, as it seems the ticketing counter and the staff at the entrance operate on a different time table. We were told cruises leave on.the hour, every hour. We arrived at 6:30 pm and bought the ticket for the 7 pm cruise. However, the staff at the entrance hurried us as we were told the cruise leaves in.5 minutes (6:40 pm). Asked about the 7:00 pm.departure, we were told if you miss this one, next cruise departs at 7:15 pm. Foreigners be forewarned. This cruise company penalises you for being a foreigner. The charge a lower price for locals, and foreigners pay more. Small difference, but principles and equitable pricing matters to some, like me. We chose the 7:00 pm.cruise because it is cooler and you get to see the evening lights along the cafes and restaurants that line the river. The ride is short and pleasant, for forty minutes. But, keep your Covid Mask on because the waters in the river has a bad stench, and you will find rubbish floating on the surface. The Local City Council can learn how to deal with managing water pollution from other major cities like Singapore and Shanghai where they offer river cruises and hence clean the river regularly.Visited October 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2020
- Alex SSingapore, Singapore5 contributionsColorful river rideThe river cruise is about SGD10/pax. We took the ride in late evening(around 8pm).Overall a good experience;as read, taking the ride at night allows you to soak in the colors of the Melaka river (the municipal takes efforts in sprucing up the trail with colorful lightings on the banks and bridges. The ride was also smooth, and lasted a good 40minutes. Our only complaint was that there was no narration accompanying the ride to introduce the landscape. There was a hardly audible narrative towards the end of the ride, but in was in malayuVisited February 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 February 2020

I have been trying to visit Malacca for many years now and finally made it. Perhaps I had too high expectations but it was a bit like a tourist theme park - all very clean and crowded with slightly ridiculous bicycle taxis blaring out tedious music and packs of package tourists being led around by guides. Not a place that I will be going back to.

First of all, drink watermelon juice with a nice view of the river. Few steps down to the river walk. Many boats crossing the river from time to time. Nice bridges and decorated walls both sides.

Malacca River is the heart of the city, and, by extension, the heart of the tourist experience of the city. The walkways are lined with shops, houses, monuments etc underlining the colourful heritage & history of the place.

There are two ways to experience the river cruise, by day and after dark. At night the river is lit with multiple lights along its length. During the day you are able to see the different developments alongside the river with a reasonable commentary in English, explaining the different periods of this historic city.

The river cruise at night is a must do . Afterwards have dinner at one of the many restaurants along the riverbank.
If spend some time watching the river in the morning you might see surprising wildlife.

Look for the Museum Samudera ... there's a lane on the right just before it ... take the lane and you can park there. You'll see the River Cruise Ticket booth and jetty from where you park

The price I don't remember exactly but it was not a deal breaker. Maybe around 25 Ringets (4 Ringets to 1 US dollar). I used Travelex to exchange dollars to Ringets before leaving USA. It was very helpful as Grab Car took over Uber and most drivers quote in cash with most rides in Malacca being about 4 to 7 Ringets per trip. They do not expect or require tips. Malacca is different than Penang in this way. Hotel employees actually turned down tips.

Please tell me whether these boats can carry large crowds about 200 people ( like the boats in Bangkok). If not approximately how many people can ride in one boat?

Do check out site for more info - /melakarivercruise. The boats are much smaller than those in Bangkok. It carries between 20-40 persons per trip. You could easily split the group in different boats if you are going in a large group and the boats run quite regularly. Recommend to take the ride in evening or night when the weather is cooler
