Plain Gothic style church with pretty stained glass windows
Feb 2020
This is a catholic church built in the mid 19th century by a French mission. It’s a nice example of colonial era architecture, built in a Neo-Gothic style with twin spires at the front of the entrance, but otherwise painted predominantly plain white with yellow borders. Just outside the church building are a couple of statues. One is of St Francis Xavier and the other is of some Japanese dude he converted while in Malaysia. Directly opposite the front entrance is a sculpture of Mary with infant Jesus, which for some reason is behind a glass partition. When I visited, the front entrances were closed and I had to walk round to the offices side of the church to get into the church.

Inside, it’s also quite plain. The main decorations inside are the stained glass windows in a contemporary style depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. Ironically, the best and largest pieces of stained glass windows are behind the altar depicting saints.

The building is obviously no match for the monumental Gothic churches of Europe. There’s none of the decorative sculptures that typically adorn large Gothic churches. It does make for an interesting diversion from the Malaysian and Chinese architecture of Melaka if you have time in the city, especially as it’s just outside the official heritage area of the city that most tourists frequent.

Beautiful Historical Church
Feb 2020
The church is looking good after some exterior paintwork and can't be missed in it's location set back a little on Jln Banda Kaba.
The interior is very pretty though with a simple but nicely painted ceiling, and some very lovely stained glass windows.
quiet and peaceful inside.
You won't regret stopping by for a short visit.

Beautiful church
Nov 2019 • Solo
Built in 1856 and completed in 1874.
The church is built on the site of an old Portuguese church.
Shining white walls. modern and sober stained glass, a quiet and peaceful place, apart the tremendous crowd near Stadthuys & Christ Church.

Beautiful Church
Nov 2019
It was a beautiful Church. We attended the evening Mass there and they had blowers in there but unfortunately they weren't turned on and it was terribly hot. Made it difficult to concentrate during Mass.

Similar to Goa
Nov 2019
This is the same church of St Francis Xavier which exists in Goa. The body of St Francis Xavier was taken from here to Goa as per the local guide. It is historically connected to Goa, in fact Goa was after Melaka settlement during the Portuguese rule. Situated on the roadside, so can just stop in the front and see the church if not able to go inside. In front of Little India and very near to the Dutch Square, it is easy to locate.

Nice church
Apr 2019 • Family
It is a beautiful church, small but nice. Went for Sunday mass, quite busy. Had to stand by the door as inside was too hot for me. Needs more ventilation if not aircon.
