A pleasant enough diversion, and shady which is a plus in heat. Basically if you follow the river or at least keep parallel to it, you will find the key highlights eg Jonker Walk, Stadthuys and the Fort.

There is a long stretch of the river from our hotel to the seaside and also to the other direction. What I find the authorities has done well is to have a decent path all the way beside the river on both sides. Of course certain places has closures eg development and piers where we had to figure out to go around. This is a very good exploration ride for unicycling as well as cyclist along the river and plentiful of wildlife to see eg monitor lizards, otters, fishes etc.

The route is long and we didn’t even managed go all the way. Perhaps the next time

There's a long and well kept pedestrian walkway along the river, very relaxing to walk all the way, with many good photo opps...a good way to see some of the old and new Melaka!

The banks of the Melaka River are mostly concreted, with a pedestrian walkway along each bank. The river is crossed by frequent bridges so that short or long walks taking in both banks are possible. The banks near the Stadthuys are very touristy, with bars and restaurants, but the further you walk upriver the less touristy it gets, until Kampung Morten, a traditional Malay village surrounded by the modern city. The river can be explored in a rush from the tour boats, or in leisurely fashion by walking. A few semi-wild stretches of riverbank are home to large monitor lizards, and one evening I saw a crocodile midriver. At night the banks and bridges are lit up for a very different experience.

It's a fun walk especially getting sun warmth while you were walking along the river and discovering more interesting place as you go.

Nice to get away from the crowds of Jonker street.
Cute galleries, cafes and murals.
A pretty setting. I would recommend and return!

Walking along the footpaths either side of the river was very pleasant. This includes around the Red Square and Jonker Street areas, but one can also head north towards the Swiss Garden Hotel etc. One of the impressive things about the Malacca is its cleanliness and this includes the river. In my experience in southeast Asia, small rivers that run through cities are usually fairly heavily polluted. But that is not the case here. That are a ton of restaurants and drink outlets all along the river.

Best time to walk is morning (cooling) and evening (when the pubs and restaurants open for business). Night photography is excellent.

Early morning or evening walk is the best (cool weather walking is the most comfortable). Or if you don’t mind, you can also take the river cruise bot one way to one end and walk back down (depending on where you stay). The murals on the wall is a little wire but adds to the charm of the place.
