This area of Shanghai has been redeveloped into a leisure area, thronging with top end cafes and restaurants It was fairly busy when we went through there on a Sunday dinnertime, but considering the amount of people the whole area was spotless.

The former French concession is a stylish area with upscale restaurants and cafés. The vide is good, but it felt a bit hoity-toity. I guess it's a good spot for people watching and for lounging, but it wasn't what we were into, traveling with small children.

The best way to find your way there is take the hop on/off tourist bus. We took a taxi and they dropped us off in the wrong location and it was a very lengthy walk for us. Beautiful area with lots of great shopping.

This place is worth to visit. Beautiful area, old style buildings some built by French in 1920's. Lot's of parks, very green.

The Former French Concession still recalls the golden age of Shanghai (1920s and 1930s), with many interesting buildings built by the French and a wide range of shops, restaurants, and hotels. There are trees (imported from France) and parks everywhere so it's a good place to be in the shade on a hot day. We saw a Russian orthodox church,... More

Excellent place to visit after the Yu garden, what a contrast. The garden was very busy, and full of tourist. The French Concession is quite compared to the rest of Shanghai. Nice eateries and ambience.

An opportunity to experience some western style in Shanghai. A good selection of cafes and restaurants serving something classy.

A great place to spend a day peacefully riding bicycles through this gorgeous slow paced area, in the middle of the Shanghai Metropolis. Bikes can now be easily rented, and in the summer the trees form a canopy of shade over the streets. Most of the traditional architecture is untouched. One of the parts of Shanghai that vividly recalls the... More

Staying in Xintiandi

Neighbourhood Profile
Xintiandi
The refurbishment of a block of old shikumen into a carless entertainment center called Xintiandi, filled with restaurants, shops and bars, turned this area below South Huangpi Road into one of Shanghai’s most fashionable areas. Luxe condos house people who can afford the high-end brands that fill the malls and shops along Madang Road. The pleasant Taipinghu Park provides the area with green space and is also home to Shanghai Fashion Week twice a year. It’s not all glitter and glamour, though, as the rise of Danshui Road has given the Xintiandi area a shot of toned-down character. Small bars and cafes, mostly owned by locals, have people hanging out in a formerly quiet, unassuming part of the neighborhood.
