Shanghai's Jewish legacy and experience. A half day eye-opening tour of an extraordinary story guided since 2002 by Israeli Journalist Dvir Bar-Gal. From the media: "Bar-Gal, rich with knowledge and full of humor, takes his visitors along on a mesmerizing journey into an amazing, sweet and sour world. A world where opium dealers, old world colonialists, real estate moguls, hard working poor Chinese migrants and Jewish holocaust survivors mix. "

I am not a Jew but I signed up for the tour because I like history and this tour came highly recommended by my colleague. Me and my friend were the only two non jews on the tour but Dvir the tour guide (former journalist) did not make us feel left out. His story telling was clear, sequential, interesting yet... More

We spent a whole day touring Shanghai with Dvir - first focussing on Jewish Shanghai and then on Old and New Shanghai. These tours were absolutely fantastic. You guide on the tour, Dvir, is super knowledgeable, amiable, patient, interesting, engaging, kind, accommodating and energetic. We walked all day and saw and learned things about Shanghai that you just won't see... More

I highly recommend this tour, whether or not you are Jewish. It is the 100-year story of 3 waves of Jewish immigration to Shanghai, ending in sanctuary for 20,000 of refugees from Nazi Germany during World War II. Though there are few remaining buildings and artifacts, the tour includes Jewish-built hotels along the Bund riverfront, Shanghai Ghetto ("Little Vienna"), Jewish... More

Cannot say enough about how comprehensive and informative this tour is. And Dvir is a delight - his wealth of knowledge is eclipsed only by his humor, passion and compassion. This was perhaps the most incredible tour we have ever been on, anywhere. Truly special and memorable.

This is one of the best tours I have ever taken. Dvir really knows his stuff! And he tells the story of the Jews of Shanghai in a compelling and clear manner giving us a huge historical insight into the whole being of Shanghai. I would highly recommend to Jew and Non-Jew.

My wife and I signed up for the tour of Jewish Shanghai when we went on a cruise March 2017. We met Dvir at the Fairmont Peace Hotel, a site associated with the early Jewish Community in Shanghai. He then led us along the Bund pointing out sites of interest. We then were transported to what was the site of... More

I corresponded with Dvir for several months and he came tnrough with 2 amazing tours for us during our 24 hours in Shanghai. Both were outstanding. I had known all along that the Jewish tour was a " must do" but also found the Old and New tour/ weekend tour to be one of the most unique tours we have... More

Staying in Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang

Neighbourhood Profile
Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang
West of Shanghai’s better-known business, cultural and entertainment centers, lies an expansive area of residential neighborhoods peppered with lifestyle pockets that have their own unique attractions. The schools have formed pockets of international communities throughout Gubei, Hongqiao and Minhang. Quite a few entertainment and shopping centers have built up over the years to cater to these communities. While living here means you are relatively far away from Shanghai’s usual hot spots, the large parks, spacious homes and proximity to great Japanese and Korean food keep the neighborhoods popular.
